Zanu PF tightens grip on urban politics with sweeping by-election victories Harare, August 03 – The ruling Zanu PF party delivered another blow to the weakened opposition, sweeping Saturday's local authority by-elections in urban areas that were once considered opposition strongholds. In Epworth’s Ward 6, Zanu PF candidate Bushe Civilisen won decisively with 3,022 votes, dwarfing the 120 votes garnered by the MDC-T's Alice Nyahunzvi and independent Peter Nyapetwa’s 23 votes. The turnout was 25.8%, with 25 rejected ballots. Meanwhile, in Chinhoyi’s Ward 14, Zanu PF’s Solomon Bizwork triumphed with 599 votes against independent Hope Zimbiri’s 194, at a 34.25% voter turnout. South Africa-based Zanu PF activist Kudzai Mutisi credited businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei’s campaigning for the Epworth win, stating on X (formerly Twitter): “Dr. Tagwirei’s formula for winning in urban areas works.” He dismissed opposition efforts, claiming Zimbabwe was now “every square inch a Zanu PF stronghold.” The results reinforce Zanu PF’s recent trend of reclaiming urban wards, once opposition strongholds. The MDC-T, led by Douglas Mwonzora, failed to make an impact, while Nelson Chamisa’s opposition faction did not field candidates. #ZanuPFPolitburoMeetsUnderDarkCloud Ahead of the ruling Zanu PF's politburo meeting today, it has emerged that the party's raging succession battle - now being fought on the 2030 battlefront - will intensify when President Emmerson Mnangagwa steps down as the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) chairman in mid-August and towards the party's annual conference from 13-18 October in Mutare. Well-placed party insiders told The NewsHawks this morning Mnangagwa is today expected preside over the decision-making politburo meeting this afternoon as senior leaders have begun gathering at the Zanu PF headquarters in Harare. One of the key issues lingering within the Zanu PF corridors of power is the failed bid to co-opt local business mogul Kudakwashe Tagwirei - a close Mnangagwa political ally - into the Central Committee blocked by Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga on 3 July. Tagwirei is now a key figure in Zanu PF politics as he has been the main individual funder of the party in recent years, and has now become a dark horse in the succession race, battling Chiwenga and other aspirants. From his massive wealth, which he is now leveraging for power and control, Tagwirei has funded the broke Zanu PF mainly during elections, paid its salaries, bought it corporate-like furniture and hundreds of cars, and also paid its officials in different forms, keeping the ruling party afloat. Even though Tagwirei, who also chairs the Land Tenure Implementation Committee, denies he has presidential ambitions, he acts it. The politburo met on 2 July and discussed the controversial Tagwirei issue, but no clear-cut decision was made then, as officials did not comment on the proposal to co-opt him delivered in party national commissar Munyaradzi Machacha's report. Chiwenga booted Tagwirei out of the Central Committee meeting on 3 July in front of Mnangagwa, saying he is not a member. In later turned out, Tagwirei is not eligible to join the Central Committee. In another surprise turn of events, the following day, 4 July, Mnangagwa denounced "zvigananda", a reference to Tagwirei and other cash-rich tenderpreneuers and dealers, at the party's National Consultative Assembly gathering. Tagwirei says anyone who is not a tenderprenuer is "foolish", a remark which attracted public outrage. Chiwenga has been denouncing tenderpreneuers and dealers, saying they are destroying the country through corruption and looting. He has vowed that their day of reckoning will come - soon. Informed insiders have told The NewsHawks Mnangagwa will come under more heightened succession pressure after the Sadc summit and towards the Zanu PF conference, which will resolve the 2030 agenda - that is whether or not to extend Mnangagwa's rule beyond his 2028 constitutional term limit to 2030. The Zanu PF conference in Bulawayo last year passed a resolution to do so, but Mnangagwa says he is not interested because he is a "constitutionalist" even though he came to power through a coup in November 2017. Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF faction are evidently interested in extending his term to 2030, but Chiwenga and his military-backed camp are resisting the move. Sadc will hold its next annual summit in mid-August in Madagascar where Mnangagwa will relinquish the chairmanship to President Andry Rajoelina. Zanu PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa recently lambasted Tagwirei, saying his bid "buy" the party and a position will not succeed. A senior politburo member told The NewsHawks: "There is a politburo meeting this afternoon. We have now actually started arriving at the party headquarters as we speak. This is our monthly meeting, but you know the Tagwirei issue is still lingering on despite what happened at Central Committee meeting early this month and what Mutsvangwa later said. I don't mean anyone wants to revive it, but there must be official closure on it. The other issues (2030 and succession) will be dealt with during the next conference even if it is not an elective congress. They will be discussed in one or the other to find a solution. After the Sadc summit, when the President is now more focused internally than outside, there is will be more pressure for clarity, resolution and certainty on these issues."
