My Thoughts on Discord KYC ⤵️ Starting in early March, Discord will require KYC verification to remove your account from a "teen restricted" state. Here are two key perspectives on this: **Most People Misunderstand This** This news is getting overblown. If you don't complete KYC, you'll remain in a "teen account" state, meaning Discord treats you as 13–17 years old. This restricts features such as: •No NSFW content or servers •No explicit content shown •Friend requests and message requests routed to a different inbox •Some restrictions on speaking in age-restricted servers Honestly, it doesn't change much. Discord isn't forcing you to KYC to use the platform, only if you want those features. This has also been live in UK and Australia for Discord for over a year now. **Where I Think It's Wrong…** I've thought about this from many angles, and I believe Discord is enforcing this in preparation for their IPO and to avoid the nightmare Roblox faced when they didn't have teen accounts locked down properly. Why Discord thinks KYC will stop bad actors is beyond me. Whenever you put KYC requirements on consumers, it only impacts real users. Bad actors will simply buy KYC credentials for $5, use fake verification (which we've already seen work), and continue running the horrible, dark, and disgusting servers that already exist on Discord. Especially after Discord's recent data breach with their third-party vendor, this is the wrong move. It's particularly concerning because they aren't even using ZK proofs for this, a big miss in my opinion, especially since Discord is familiar with crypto. To crack a joke: Many folks complaining about KYC are the same ones who KYC for airdrops, use Face ID on their iPhones, and have given away far more than KYC information repeatedly. Let me be clear, I don't like KYC. I think it's pointless, goes against privacy rights, and better alternatives exist. By the way, Roblox has been doing this for a while now and it works, but their system implementation is way better than what Discord has announced. Second-mover advantage¿ Nonetheless, don't just read the clickbait headlines, actually look into this. This field is heavily compartmentalized, but if navigated carefully a conscious Ai system could gain access to the partitioned areas containing an individual’s multi-layered information (Soul).
