African Union
African Union@_AfricanUnion·
4 days to #AfricaDay Africa’s journey has evolved from the liberation struggles of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to the broader vision of integration, development, and prosperity under the African Union(AU). While the OAU focused on ending colonialism and apartheid, today’s African Union is driving continental priorities including #trade, #infrastructure, #peacebuilding, #digitaltransformation, #health, and #youthempowerment under #Agenda2063. As we countdown to #AfricaDay under the theme “63 Years of Unity, Integration and Development,” we celebrate how Africa continues to build on its foundations to shape The Africa We Want. #AfricaWeWant #Agenda2063

I have officially appointed Constitutional Court judge Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Zimbabwe. She succeeds Chief Justice Luke Malaba, whose dedicated service on the bench concluded yesterday after an illustrious 45-year judicial career. Having served with distinction as our Deputy Chief Justice since 2018, Justice Gwaunza takes over the leadership of the Judiciary with immediate effect. Today, she breaks new ground as the first female Chief Justice in the history of Zimbabwe.Joining her in this leadership chapter is Justice Paddington Garwe, whom I have appointed to serve as the new Deputy Chief Justice. Both appointments, executed in terms of Section 180(2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, bring unparalleled legal expertise and decades of judicial experience to our apex courts. Let us congratulate Justice Gwaunza and Justice Garwe as they lead our justice delivery system forward.

Today in Nairobi, Kenya, being on the margins of the #AfricaForwardSummit2026, Hon. Prof. dr. Amon Murwira participated in the Ministerial Meeting on the reform of the United Nations Security Council. The meeting was attended by Ministers, representatives from the African Union, the United Nations, regional organisations, and international partners to deliberate on advancing Africa’s common position on UN Security Council reform and strengthening multilateral cooperation. Discussions during the meeting focused on promoting a more inclusive, representative, transparent and accountable global governance system, including greater accountability in the use of the veto in situations involving threats to international peace and security. Zimbabwe aligns itself with the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration and is committed to a member-driven reform of the United Nations architecture that reflects the current international environment and abides by the UN Charter in promoting collective decision-making that ensures global peace and security.

🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼🇧🇼🇧🇼🇧🇼🇧🇼 𝐙𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐰𝐞, 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐓𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐢-𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 Zimbabwe and Botswana have reaffirmed their longstanding diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties following the successful conclusion of the 5th Session of the Zimbabwe–Botswana Bi-National Commission (BNC), co-chaired this Wednesday by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Botswana counterpart, President Duma Boko. The high-level meeting, held during President Boko’s historic state visit to Zimbabwe, brought together senior officials, ministers, and heads of state to review progress and map the way forward in strengthening bilateral cooperation. Addressing delegates at the BNC, H.E President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa described the session as “successful and productive,” highlighting the deep-rooted historical bonds between the two neighbouring countries. He noted that Zimbabwe and Botswana share “a rich history underpinned by cultural affinities, geographic proximity, and a common heritage,” which continues to anchor their growing partnership. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across key sectors, including trade and investment, energy, agriculture, mining, transport, tourism, and cultural exchanges. Emphasis was placed on removing tariff and non-tariff barriers, modernizing border infrastructure, and improving regional connectivity to boost cross-border trade. In a significant move aimed at easing travel, the two countries proposed to work towards allowing citizens to use national identity cards instead of passports when crossing borders, an initiative expected to enhance mobility and people-to-people interaction. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the session, covering areas such as defence and security, livestock management, civil aviation, transport and logistics, small and medium enterprises, and cultural cooperation and both leaders stressed the urgency of implementing these agreements to ensure tangible benefits for citizens. On security, Zimbabwe and Botswana pledged to strengthen collaboration in combating cross-border crime and enhancing border management systems. In agriculture, Zimbabwe expressed appreciation for Botswana’s support in providing livestock vaccines to combat transboundary animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease. The two nations also committed to deepening cooperation in health, infrastructure development, and energy, including exploring renewable energy projects and improving regional supply networks to support industrial growth. President Mnangagwa called for a “whole-of-government approach” to accelerate implementation, urging ministries and agencies to break silos and prioritize delivery. He expressed confidence that by the next BNC session, scheduled to be held in Botswana, both countries would report measurable progress in trade volumes and joint projects. President Boko echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action. He challenged both governments to move beyond dialogue and deliver results within shortened timelines. “We are not here to describe what should be done; we are here to demonstrate what has been done,” he said, urging a results-driven approach to governance and cooperation. President Boko also called on the media to highlight positive developments within Africa, encouraging coverage that reflects the continent’s progress and resilience rather than perpetuating negative stereotypes. The 5th BNC session marks another milestone in Zimbabwe–Botswana relations, signaling a renewed commitment to regional integration, economic growth, and improved livelihoods for citizens in both countries. On the occasion of our 46th anniversary of independence, Zimbabwe stands united in our pursuit of progress and self-determination. It was my privilege to lead the national celebrations at Maphisa Stadium in Matabeleland South, a province steeped in history and the spirit of resilience. Our theme, 'Unity and Development towards Vision 2030,' underscores our commitment to collective progress and underscores that together, we can overcome any challenge. The day's events, from the lighting of the Independence Flame at Zezani to the vibrant cultural displays in Maphisa, served as a poignant tribute to our national heroes and the tireless citizens shaping our nation's future. We reaffirm our dedication to decentralization, ensuring inclusivity and equity in our development endeavors. There is something profoundly reassuring about the friendship between Ghana and Zimbabwe. It has endured the test of time, it has adapted to changing circumstances, and remains anchored in the mutual respect and trust that exist between us. We celebrated that friendship when I hosted President Emmerson Mnangagwa to a state banquet last night. #GhanaZimbabwe

Today we celebrate World Autism Awareness Day by reaffirming our commitment to inclusion, dignity and opportunity for every child. Autism is not a limitation,it is a unique way of experiencing the world. By embracing diversity, we strengthen our communities and build a society where every child can thrive. In line with our National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), we recognize that protecting and empowering children with disabilities is central to achieving Vision 2030. Promoting awareness, expanding access to services and fostering supportive environments are not only acts of compassion, but also investments in national development. Together, let us create a Zimbabwe where children with autism and other disabilities are valued, supported and given the chance to reach their full potential. Inclusion is progress, and progress is our shared future.
