🚨 EMERGENCY FOR KRINGLE 🚨 I never imagined I’d be writing this tonight. Tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., the dog who started Layla’s Heart Ranch and Rescue will undergo unexpected surgery. Five years ago, I walked into a shelter and met a pit bull named Kringle. I didn’t know it then, but that moment would change my life forever. Looking back now, I truly believe we were meant to find each other. Our paths were written together long before we ever met. Kringle has the most extraordinary deep golden eyes. They remind me of a lion’s eyes, and he has the heart of one too. He is an old soul. Brave. Loyal. Gentle. Funny. Brilliant. Affectionate. The kind of dog who changes your life simply by being in it. He is my heart. Kringle wasn’t just our first rescue. He is the reason Layla’s Heart Ranch and Rescue exists. Every senior we’ve loved. Every abused dog we’ve fought for. Every puppy who’s grown up safe. Every medical case we’ve refused to give up on. Every dog you’ve ever asked us to rescue… It all started with Kringle. Tonight, while putting everyone away for bed, we discovered that several growths we’ve been monitoring had suddenly ballooned in size. I immediately sent photos to our veterinary technician, who spoke with our veterinarian. Kringle needs surgery tomorrow. We’ve been warned that if these masses rupture, they could bleed…and bleed…and bleed. Waiting is not an option. Tomorrow he’ll have bloodwork, surgery to remove the masses, possible X-rays, any additional diagnostics the veterinarian recommends, and while he’s there, we’ll also update his annual vaccinations. Because they haven’t examined him yet, they can’t give us an exact estimate, but we’ve been told to prepare for a bill similar to Picante’s surgery. That bill was around $3,500. We don’t have that. But we also don’t have the option of waiting. WE NEED SHADE TODAY 🚨 Summer is here, and temperatures are rising quickly. Our immediate need is shade. Today, we need to purchase heavy-duty tarps to provide additional shade in our play yards. These aren’t small tarps from the hardware store. Covering large dog yards safely requires multiple large, durable tarps, and they are expensive. But with a Texas summer ahead of us, they are not optional. At the same time, we are facing multiple recent emergency veterinary expenses, June operational bills, and the daily cost of running generators to keep our dogs cool. Last summer, fuel costs averaged $75 per day. This year, we expect even more. The good news is that a generous supporter has offered a $5,000 matching challenge through next Wednesday. When it rains, it pours….that’s the saying, right? Well… Daisy Mae’s puppies AND the Candy Litter have officially entered their tiny escape artist era. The puppy play yards that once contained them are no match for growing, confident, energetic rescue puppies anymore. This morning turned into complete puppy chaos as multiple little fugitives made their great escape across the ranch. Thankfully everyone is safe, happy, and accounted for… but it also means we urgently need larger and more secure puppy play yards for them. And honestly, this is rescue. The animals grow. Their needs change. What worked two weeks ago suddenly doesn’t work anymore. It’s always something in rescue. But seeing these puppies healthy enough, playful enough, and confident enough to cause this kind of chaos after everything they survived is also something we’re incredibly grateful for. Daisy Mae’s puppies lost their mama far too soon. The Candy Litter came from an abusive home where they lived in fear. Now they’re running, playing, exploring, and acting like carefree puppies should. If anyone would like to help us purchase additional puppy play yards and supplies, we would be beyond grateful. Yesterday, I was leaving the laundromat. (We don’t even have a washer and dryer right now…) And this sweet boy wandered up to me. Skin and bones. Missing hair across his head and chest. Deep elbow wounds that look infected. Old scars that look like bite marks. I don’t know what he’s been through. But my heart says it was horrific. And still… he was gentle. In rescue, we interrupt suffering. Even when intake is closed. Even when we don’t have space. Even when we don’t have the money. Because what was I supposed to do? Walk away and leave him there to die? I couldn’t. We named him Smoke. Because somehow… he made it through whatever fire he had to walk through to find me. And because he’s the most beautiful grey. He goes to the vet this morning at 8:30am. He needs medical care. He needs treatment. And we need a kennel setup for him because we are completely out of space ($600). Last night…he climbed into my chair that I have sitting in one of the play yards…curled up…and just fell asleep. Like he finally felt safe. Like maybe… for the first time ever…he was loved. $5 FRIDAY — HELP PLEASE, INTAKE PAUSED Right now, we are having to make the incredibly hard decision to pause taking in new dogs. Not because we don’t want to help… but because the ones already here need us more. Rescue isn’t just about numbers. It’s not about how many dogs you can bring in or how many lives you can save in a short amount of time. Because when that’s all rescue becomes… that’s when things start to break down. Rescue is about responsibility. It’s about making sure the ones already in your care are safe, healthy, and truly cared for. And right now… we are stretched trying to do that. Today alone, I spent over $200 on medications. And that’s just one small piece of what it takes to keep them going. There is always something. Always another need. Always another life depending on us to figure it out. Our kennel floors are failing. They’re wood, and no matter how much we clean, they hold bacteria, break down, and turn to mud. It’s not safe. And it’s not what they deserve. We need concrete— for their health, their safety, and their quality of life. TIWANAKU - is it greed, or connections that just don’t care about horses? Voided claim a year ago- (Oaklawn) huge ankles - -sore. No break or retirement - just off to La- to try and make more money. Than the process begins to try and get him retired which is “ one last race”until there is little hope of a horse having a life after racing. I now have him back and implore licensed owners- trainers - STOP on sore, lame horses to give horses a dignified retirement to be able to have a life after racing .
