@KurtSchlichter Dear Sir, for the sake of the U.S., it would be better to write about Trump as a person rather than as a symbol of the U.S. This really does harm the U.S.

The Europeans are not dealing with “a man.” They are dealing with the United States of America. The United States needed the most innocuous kind of cooperation from them. They denied the United States that cooperation. The implied argument is that their obligations within our alliance depend on whether they like the guy we chose as our president. “Sure, we’re allies…if we approve of who you elected.” Nope. We are not going to forget, and we’re not going to forgive. I’m indifferent to their excuses or their rationalizations. The United States of America needed their help and not very much help. They turned us down. That changes everything. And they aren’t going to like how it changes everything.
Gerard Baker@gerardtbaker

The casuistry here is remarkable. This is the simple reality: Like most Americans, most Europeans think this war is a bad idea.Their governments are being asked to take a huge risk by a man who has proved unreliable, volatile and intemperate over and over. Who would do that?

When it comes to China, Trump is a total wimp—he backs down from all his threats and actions against China the moment President Xi gives him a dirty look. And when it comes to Russia, aside from threats (and sanctions against Rosneft), there’s nothing else. He even let Russia supply oil to Cuba… and it’s not even worth mentioning what he says about Putin and Xi and comparing it to what he says, for example, about Prime Minister Starmer

Applebaum's piece is worth reading slowly because the specific details are doing work that the summary can't. Danish military commanders - inside a NATO alliance the United States founded - had to sit in a room and war-game whether their forces would shoot down American planes and kill American soldiers. Some of them still haven't fully recovered from running that exercise. The most popular app in Denmark during Applebaum's visit was one that identifies American products so users know not to buy them. NATO has invoked Article 5 exactly once in its history. On behalf of the United States. After September 11th. Allied troops went to Afghanistan and some of them died there. Trump told reporters those allies "stayed a little back, a little off the front lines." The families of soldiers who didn't come back heard that. Now Trump is in the middle of a war in the Persian Gulf with the Strait of Hormuz locked, oil prices spiking, and he's telling NATO allies - the same ones he insulted and tariffed and threatened - that he's "demanding" they come help solve a problem his own decisions helped create. Applebaum's conclusion is precise: he doesn't connect what he does on one day to what happens weeks later. Allied leaders have drawn their conclusions. The rupture, as Mark Carney called it, isn't coming. It already happened.

Trump has insulted and tariffed his European allies, persuaded Denmark to prepare for a US invasion and, by pressuring Ukraine and not Russia, encouraged Putin to keep fighting. All of which he has forgotten. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/03/…

@NotSethMSouza @micyoung75 @joni_askola Climate change is an issue worth addressing, but only when the geopolitical climate is favorable. So now is not the time for that. There are different Republican presidents—it’s hard to compare, for example, the two Bushes with Trump…

@Zuczkowski_M @micyoung75 @joni_askola No. NATO made it clear that they wanted to focus on the Marxist globalist objectives of combatting climate change. What made them think that a Republican president would be on board with that? Were they convinced that we would never have a Republican president again?

Check polls in Poland about USA. USA use polish people trust in USA to gain numerous privileges (e.g., social media platforms, selling weapons etc) for essentially nothing. But that’s over now. Most of the public no longer trusts the U.S. And Poles used to be more pro-American than Americans themselves.

Honest opinion
Gandalv@Microinteracti1

Right then. Let me explain something very slowly, because it appears some basic logic has gone missing somewhere over the Atlantic. No serious nation in the history of warfare has spent fourteen months insulting its allies, threatening to annex their territory, siding with their common enemy, and then knocked on their door expecting them to come running to rescue a catastrophe of its own making. That is not how alliances work. That is not how anything works. You abused the UK. You threatened Canada. You tried to grab Greenland. You called the EU an adversary. You praised Putin, the one man every serious NATO ally has spent decades preparing to fight. You hosted Kremlin officials in the Capitol. You undermined European elections. You abandoned Ukraine. You imposed tariffs on your closest partners. You did all of this loudly, proudly, and on camera. And now you are surprised that nobody is returning your calls. Here is a question worth sitting with. Why do you think that is? Is it possible, just possible, that when you treat your allies like enemies for over a year while cuddling up to their actual enemy, those allies might update their opinion of you? Is that concept too complicated? Does that require more working memory than is currently available? You did not plan this war with your allies. You did not consult them. You did not build a coalition. You started a conflict, watched it go sideways, and then got on your knees asking for help from people you spent fourteen months calling weak, corrupt and irrelevant. NATO is not what it was. Not because Europe changed. Because Washington made crystal clear which side it is on. And it is not ours. You want European boots on the ground? Start by explaining why America is more aligned with Moscow than with Brussels. Take your time. We will wait. Gandalv / @Microinteracti1

Terrifying ignorance in full display. Ari, you might want to check with, for ex, Radek Sikorski in Warsaw. Europeans, especially Eastern Europeans, feel betrayed by the US, switching from defending UKR to playing around with Putin. America risks losing Europe.
Gideon Rachman@gideonrachman

I’ve got news for you. The governments of Poland and the Baltic states distrust and dislike the Trump administration even more than the western Europeans because they are directly threatened by Trump’s friendliness towards Putin. The UN vote where the US voted with Russia and N.Korea against Ukraine is copied and framed on the wall of the Estonian foreign ministry

I regret that some NATO allies are denying us access to our bases in their countries. I also regret that the US president threatened to invade and annex NATO countries. This ridiculous Trump policy is obviously negatively impacting our national security now. I hope both of these issues within NATO can be overcome soon.

@USronaldcarter NATO is a defensive alliance, not an offensive one. And secondly, Trump started the war on his own without consulting anyone in NATO about it, and now, with his usual grace, he’s demanding support and asking them to clean up the mess of the war he started in the name of Israel.

🚨 NOBODY KNOWS HOW FUCKED NATO ACTUALLY IS RIGHT NOW. In the last 72 hours, watch who walked away: 🇫🇷 France: Blocked US military overflight for weapons to Israel — FIRST TIME since war began Feb 28. Israel cut ALL defense procurement from France. 🇮🇹 Italy: Denied Sigonella air base landing to US bombers. Defense Minister said relations are "solid and loyal." DAYS after blocking US planes. 🇪🇸 Spain: Closed ENTIRE airspace to US operations. Blocked Naval Station Rota AND Morón Air Base. PM Sánchez called it "not NATO collective defense." 🇵🇱 Poland: Refused to redeploy Patriot batteries. US burned through 1,200+ interceptors in 16 days. Poland said no. 🇨🇭 Switzerland: Denied 2 US reconnaissance flights. Suspended $120,000,000 in weapons exports under "neutrality laws." 🇬🇧 UK: PM said "this is not our war." Trump told them to "build up some delayed courage." 🇩🇪 Germany: President Steinmeier called war "possibly illegal." WHILE hosting Ramstein — largest US base outside America. That is: France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Switzerland, UK, and Germany. All in ONE week. When this many allies abandon you at once, it's not a disagreement. It's a collapse.

@Zuczkowski_M @RepYassAnsari The Iranian regime is among the worst governments in modern history. It’s not just a theocracy with an apocalyptic vision but it’s an Islamist Nazi like regime. And it’s constantly at war with us. So, we will finally extract all the pain, retribution and vengeance on them we can.

@SenSchumer @RymMomtaz @SecRubio Congress and the Senate are currently a group of people who have about as much say in politics as the Russian Duma. Trump doesn’t care about you and does whatever he wants, and you lack the backbone (Republicans) and the strength (Democrats) to stand up to him.

I can promise this: The Senate will not vote to leave NATO and abandon our allies just because Trump is upset they wouldn’t go along with his reckless war of choice.   Thank you to @SecRubio for sponsoring the bill in 2023 requiring a two thirds vote of the Senate to make sure clueless presidents couldn’t act on a whim.
