I’m in Dulwich. One of the more expensive areas of London, supposedly a global city, and I’m getting worse mobile phone reception that I did in Kabul a decade ago. I pay for two contracts: @O2 and @EE and neither is reliable so I can’t work. Mobile phones are useless in vast areas of Britain and have got worse. You can never work on a train, unlike in France. But we’re spending £4.5 billion in bike lanes and crossings. This government is prioritising virtue signalling vanity projects when we need infrastructure urgently.

@realhansard okay, but even under this what is wrong with 'domestic abuse survivor'? many people *do* die from domestic abuse. and if you insist it has to be a single incident then do you object to 'cancer survivor' too?

I find the modern, widespread use of the word “survivor” to be completely excessive. I think you are a survivor if you live after an incident where someone else died. e.g. a plane crash. But not for other accidents or criminal events.
Matt Goodwin@GoodwinMJ

Under a Reform government, foreign nationals in social housing will be given three months to find private accommodation or face being deported. British military veterans, long-term local residents, domestic abuse survivors will be given priority.

It should absolutely be illegal for car insurance to discriminate based on gender if car insurance is required Effective Taxes that charge you more based on the sins of other people who share immutable qualities should never be allowed

@abundancechud @SamsonCorwell @LinkofSunshine ok tbf as someone who agrees with you on the object level this is, I think, clearly an uncomfortable bullet to bite! it genuinely does suck for people born of a certain race to be compelled to pay more on those grounds!!

@SamsonCorwell @LinkofSunshine @abundancechud roughly, there are many different firms which have license to predict individual risk of crime and charge whatever prices for crime insurance they wish to according to these predictions

@LinkofSunshine @abundancechud I think it's entirely fair to prefer market distortions to direct tax and transfer, of course. but you're not going to catch me out on some inconsistency gotcha here!

@LinkofSunshine @abundancechud if the policy was "everyone must carry crime insurance to hedge their risk of committing crimes" and there was a ~free market for actual risk of crime, I would be okay with said insurers considering these factors in their risk assessments, yes

@LinkofSunshine my view is roughly "price risk accurately, and if society wants to help people who are born high-risk, do it openly through tax and transfer, not by forcing the insurance system to carry a hidden and distortionary cross-subsidy"

@_AK1089_ This is fair if it’s not government enforced, but cause it’s mandatory, it becomes closer to a tax on race on religion

@tilde_posting @LinkofSunshine I mean I think this is basically fine. like if insurance firms structurally discriminated against X group (and this is unfair) then there is tremendous alpha in simply selling insurance to this group at fair actuarial prices! and you should expect someone to do this

@LinkofSunshine @_AK1089_ Insurance companies should be obligated to show any such group based price discrimination is statistically valid though Shouldn’t just be able to decide disliked groups pay more for the fun of it

@LinkofSunshine you are correct that it would be inconsistent for me to now balk at actuarial discrimination on grounds of race or religion, but in fact I bite that bullet; I think it's fine for insurance firms to do this insofar as it is predictive of relevant outcomes.

@_AK1089_ Should they be allowed to discriminate on race or religion if it was significant? Why should the low risk group have to suffer

@LinkofSunshine I don't see why this is particularly relevant. I also did not choose to be low in conscientiousness, but it's obviously relevant to fair actuarial pricing!

Obviously there are many blockers to success in the EU, so I don't really have hope for the continent long-term. I think Britain can pull through, though. A lot of work, but possible.

Probably the first time I have felt properly scared about not being American. I read europe2031.ai on Thursday and thought 'wow, this is a pessimistic scenario, let's hope we use the next year effectively to avoid it'. But might actually be too late already.

@LinkofSunshine stocks absolutely can be compared to flows if you keep track of the units correctly; this statement is equivalent to "Canada's economic output is less than one SpaceX per year".
