But at the same time Riot did get fucked legally for the systematic sexism at their office, so it could be illegal

Game: Valorant AC: Vanguard (VGK) Today’s Vanguard anti-cheat update blocked the majority of DMA firmwares using SATA/NVMe. VGK suddenly triggered an IOMMU restart warning in-game, after which the DMA firmware becomes completely unusable, even without the game running or after uninstalling Vanguard. Only fix is a full OS reinstall. It’s using IOMMU to create read blocks, which permanently breaks the majority of almost all SATA/NVMe firmwares once triggered. Even the advanced H2-board got affected. Confirmed Firmware Block wave by @ItsGamerDoc

They are not actively altering the firmware but rather looking for workarounds to already existing security measures, and then patching them, by updating Vanguard to look for the improper IOMMU measures and blocking users before they play

@NWeasels @VarsityGamingTV First of all, this is not OS related, but motherboard firmware related, only some motherboards had this IOMMU exploit. Secondly, they are not directly altering firmware, but rather are detecting whether the firmware improperly initialized the IOMMU protections and block users.

@honkinwaffle @stupidtechtakes The term bricked can be used for temporary situations. If I update my BIOS, and that update is corrupted, then I essentially just bricked my motherboard until I flash a new one. But for the time being my motherboard is essentially a brick, even if just temporary, hence "bricked".

@RekklexRevived @Alexander1123r @SkinSpotlights This is just outright wrong. Not "any software" on your pc could potentially brick it. This mostly pertains to kernel-level access software. This kind of access is usually reserved for critical software like drivers, etc, that actually need that kind of access to control your PC.

If you dont do anything about that you’re just giving them a free entry point. might as well have no AC at all (*cough* CS2)

Bugs happen, so what if a new bug fucks your GPU, OS, etc?

@violet_rancor @TheLetterJ___ @BluebriarArts Another one with this definition. Something that is temporarily unusable is bricked even if there is a simple fix for it. If my GPU gets bricked by a bad BIOS update, then flashing a new one can fix it, essentially making it a brick but only for a certain time.

@NWeasels @VarsityGamingTV No you are simply wrong, Riot is in the legal right to enforce security measures, even fixing them in case there are workarounds like in this case. But this case did showcase to many people that Riot could potentially fuck up and brick more than just some cheating rats DMAs.

They may have written that permission into the eula but eula's tend to fall apart spectacularly in court when things happen outside the realm of reasonably expected alterations.

@NWeasels @VarsityGamingTV However, I do feel like Riot should not have the power to potentially brick some innocent customers hardware, be that any DMA that was not used for cheating, or potentially more like a GPU. That is the only thing I am arguing here. I do not like this kind of overreach.

@NWeasels @VarsityGamingTV Yeah, and it's also perfectly legal for Riot to enforce an already existing IOMMU security measure to prevent tampering with their software. As well as patching workarounds from these measures, hence properly enforcing this. Riot is by no means breaking any laws.

Not condoning cheating in a game (don’t do that), but I don’t think any anti-cheat software should have the ability to cause this much damage or dive so far into a machine’s kernel processes. Vanguard has caused issues for many innocent users prior to this. It’s not stable.

@HuskSenpai @ussdixiecrat How effective is Vanguard really? They don't publish any numbers. Plus this wasn't bricking any hardware, only firmware, flash new firmware and all the DMAs work again. So this is effectively only a marketing stunt, yet at the same time, they could actually use it to brick PCs...

Hence why it was technically always possible for this to happen, but never really did. Since Intel, AMD, etc want to make sure their drivers dont brick your PC.

Now imagine they fuck up again, and this time Vanguard targets an important windows .dll, essentially bricking your OS, only that this time you cant just force quit Vanguard

But what Riot is doing is enforcing an already existing IOMMU security measure. They essentially just patched a hole.
