Is there any kind of plausible contract system in college basketball where a Western Kentucky could keep a core group of players together for 3-4 years without the stars getting bid away by Big Ten teams if they outperform expectations?

@tominsalem @Sam_Federman @jack92364 Yes but the formula says winning a road game in a mid major conference against a 20 win team has less value than winning a home game in a high major conference against a 10 win team. Its dumb. It devalues winning games.

@Sam_Federman @jack92364 What a team does is determined by a formula that all the schools have. It's not complicated. They know the rules. They all have the formula.

Bob Richey had a very long answer about this last night in his press conference, referencing how ETSU won the regular season title and dropped 30 spots in the metrics. "Mid-majors should play mid-majors, but if you lose to them, look at what happens in the rankings. If you win, you don't move a lot either."
Sam Federman tweet media
Lob Richey@LobRichey

Gap between high and mid-majors in KP and other metrics will continue to get bigger as long as the little guys are locked out by the P4. (I get why team like Furman are not scheduled by high-majors, but still)

@Genetics56 You will never see schools allowed to play lower levels by sport because shared resources of sports will still exist. Michigan would dominate D3 cross county for example.

Big Ten information and news
Long overdue. If they move forward with this, then we can have G6 merge with FCS for football and then the largest universities can go their own way. But, it also doesn't go far enough. They need to allow schools to lower sports toD2 or D3 if they want to lower investment

@TheMortBus Mid majors are largely all transfers now too. The number of developed players is down to 10% or less of rosters going forward. You can see this phenomenon working its way upward on KenPom as AE, ASUN, SoCon have slowly been drained to all newcomer leagues.

@_CATNERD2 @RossDellenger yes Texas and Texas Tech spent their 20.5 mill Revenue Share from the school, thenplus perhaps an additonal $20+Million through NIL from businesses or collectives.

Big Ten has been socializing this over the last few weeks. UCLA coach Mick Cronin spoke at length about the conference's desire to create a separate "cap" for retaining players. Of course, some folks want to completely lift the cap as written about here bit.ly/49Z6nOd
Ben Portnoy@bportnoy15

The Big Ten is pushing for a new roster retention carve out that would allow schools to go over the cap in order to re-sign players, sources tell @SBJ. The idea would be for the measure to function similarly to Bird rights in the NBA. sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2026/…

@JosephSzymanski Players need to decide what's more important, playing time to prepare for a pro basketball career and put stuff on film, or cashing in now but having poor pro prospects after graduation.

@JosephSzymanski For what will be half to 3/4 of 1 Millions dollars.... The antiqauted "level that's right for you" convo went on the window when 6 and 7 figure salaries became common place.

@laurbor2 Working just as hard is not a reflection of responsibility. Assts often work "just as hard" as the head coach. But the head coach has more respnsibliites. The $ is for the responsibility. Not the level of work.

Over half a million difference between assistant salary pool and support staff salary pool. Support staff works as hard as assistants. The disparity between assistants and support staff salaries across NCAA should be studied.
 Raoul@Raoul_000

The contract for new Rutgers WBB head coach Gary Redus II includes $4 million in salary over five years, with a minimum pool of $850,000 for assistant coach salaries and a minimum pool of $275,000 for other support staff nj.com/rutgerswomen/2…

@DbCoachJulian You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how recruiting works and ever what was said in the convo. If you have a DB group of primarily under 5'10 guys you will need to try and find "bigger DB's" in the next cyle. No one said "too small" You just a HS DB coach it's above you

Lot of weird takes about La Salle given this Dockery transfer news. NIL is not just a La Salle issue, if rumors are true of what other programs are spending next season it’s a major problem across the board

@_CATNERD2 @azteczzzz @CBB_Central If they had lost in conference but still win 30 games they weren't an at-large team. Evidence is First Four. They couldn't afford to lose in conference with how bad that schedule was.

High Point played the 355th ranked non-con this year. Robert Morris played the 352nd-ranked OOC in 2025. JMU played the 343rd-ranked OOC in 2024. None were getting at-large bids without their autobids. And none came close to going undefeated. Going undefeated is very hard!
Trey ➐@azteczzzz

@CBB_Central Miami OH is a good team. Not great, but a good mid-major. How often have good mid-majors played arguably the worst non-con schedule in all of D1? It’s a model that hasn’t been tried.

@CBB_Central Miami is probably better than those teams but let’s be real, Kenpom has them rated as the 15th luckiest team. It took a cake schedule and an extraordinary run of luck to get to 1 loss. Let’s stop saying undefeated. They lost to a bad team, it counts just as much as the others.

The very few mid-majors with the budget to buy a bunch of home games are welcome to try this, completely eliminating almost any at-large hope with even two total losses in exchange for a maybe 5% at best chance of going undefeated. Best of luck if anyone wants to try that.
Sully@sullymygoodname

Very interested in the precedent Miami has set going forward - what if mid majors dont actually have to schedule good teams? What if you just schedule a bunch of trash and win your games? This year has told us you can get the court of public opinion on your side.

@TheMightyHams chances of going 31-0 are always going to be like 1 or 2% - but if a team prioritized having a shit schedule I could see it happening again in the next 5 years. As you said, NC undefeated is doable - going undefeated in your league is the hard part.

Flip side, why I left Miami OH out: -Miami OH had 0 wins vs field -Miami OH had 0 Q1 wins (first time ever) -Miami OH had more Q4 losses than Q1 wins (first time ever) -Miami OH #340 SOS (worst ever for at-large team) -Miami OH #363 NCSOS (worst ever for at-large team) -Miami OH failed to make semifinals in MAC Tournament (MAC #16 per Torvik, #17 per KP) -2 of Miami OH's 3 Q2 wins are within eight spots of being Q3 -Miami OH only played one game vs NET Top 125 all season, and the game was at home

@adamg1224 the odds of it happening again are low but the point is that it is a blueprint for mid majors that you dont actually have to schedule quality. You just have to stack wins.
