A furious reaction: "You're cowards.” The atmosphere has changed not only for Francesca Albanese, once a champion of the left and then abandoned by Italy's Democratic Party, but also for her husband Massimiliano Calì, who was removed from his World Bank role as head of its Syria dossier.” Albanese herself announced the news to The Guardian, accusing the World Bank of being “utterly cowardly”because her husband “has an impeccable record in all his roles.” Albanese's blamed a “campaign that led to his removal” by the NGO UN Watch. The request to take action against Calì originated with a letter sent by the NGO to the World Bank on August 12 (copying US Secretary of State Marco Rubio). In the letter, as Hillel Neuer, executive director of United Nations Watch, recounts, “we asked the World Bank to hold Massimiliano Calì accountable for extremist political conduct that flagrantly violates its duty to act responsibly in public statements and to avoid compromising the World Bank's neutrality and causing reputational risk.” UN Watch documented a series of his posts (many of which have since been deleted) in which he claims that “Israel fabricates phantom knife attacks” and promoting “his wife's report to the United Nations accusing Israel of genocide, completely ignoring the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7.” Calì's removal from his post, while he remains employed at the World Bank, thus sparked an angry reaction from his wife, now known for refusing to accept criticism, with an attitude that has led to her being abandoned even by those who until recently praised her. Iran’s goals center on national sovereignty, and they have sought to project influence regionally through allied governments and forces (Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthi, Iraqi militias, etc.), what’s often called the “Axis of Resistance.” Their goals do not include establishing any kind of caliphate. A caliphate is a specifically Sunni political-theological concept rooted in succession to the Prophet Muhammad. Iran is Shia, and the ideological framework of the Islamic Republic – Khomeini’s velayat-e faqih (guardianship of the jurist) – is a distinctly Shia doctrine with no ambition to govern Sunni Muslims.
