@InnerDelicious @JeremiahDJohns The post makes it seem these scenes of hospitals and the dead marshes were there because of his experiences, which isn't true. But I'm sure his experiences in the army hospital and on the somme helped to shape the description of these scenes.
English

@_SweetDan @JeremiahDJohns Nobody's saying it was an intentional allegory but that such things give us a window into the author
English

@JeremiahDJohns For clarification: I don't mean that his life experiences and views don't bleed into the text. What I mean is that if you say that the dead marshes, the hospitals or the premise of the book are meant to represent those experiences or exist in the text because of them you're wrong
English

@JeremiahDJohns Tolkien calls that applicability. He hated allegory. Nothing in his work is meant by him to represent something or be a allegory to something. He wants the readers to take whatever lessons and interpretations of the text as they will.
English

@JeremiahDJohns If you want to understand his views on allegory and applicability better please read the forward to The Lord Of The Rings, where he explains it himself and makes it clear his work is not about WWI or WWII as many people suggest.
English

@JeremiahDJohns You can see it as a representation of his experience in WWI and that's fine, he'd lovr to hear your interpretations, but remember that it's only a personal view and anyone that says something in his works is MEANT to be something or that it represents X is wrong.

@Chizitere_xyz If I jump from high enough so there is no possibility that the fall wouldn't kill me would I always die or the circumstances leading to my jump change?
English

@Chizitere_xyz Question: can the possibility of survival be in the moments leading up to death or just in the exact moment of death?
If I jump from a skyscraper do I shift to a reality where the window didn't open or to one where I fell but survived with all my bones broken?
English

Did you know that according to the theory of Quantum Immortality, it is physically impossible for you to experience your own death? Because your consciousness can only exist in a living state, the moment you face a fatal event, your mind simply locks onto a parallel universe where you survived. The times you "narrowly escaped" a car crash or a severe illness? You might have actually died in the original timeline, and this is just the alternate universe where you got lucky.

@DevotedScion @xaeluh True, but you can't change worlds from a non starting city aetheryte. So old Sharlyan still loses :(
English

@_SweetDan @xaeluh This is all true, but to be fair, Baldesion Annex is actually closer to its aetheryte and with a much prettier room.

@Boxy_FT Even after the fall of the Yuan to the Ming, the Yuan persisted in Mongolia as the Northern Yuan, still claiming the throne of China for another 300 years. So this ancestor worship of the Yuan founder, Genghis khan, might have endured and transformed.
English

@Boxy_FT When Kublai Khan conquered China and created the Yuan dynasty he established his grandfather, Genghis, as it's founder. To legitimize his rule he embraced several Chinese traditions, including ancestor worship of his grandfather, which might be the root of current worship.
English

Genuine question - is this Genghis Khan worship an actual old tradition or is it a modern phenomenon now that he's considered cool, and the most notable Mongol in history?
Steppe Shaman@SteppeShaman
Mongols honoring a stone stele of Genghis Khan. The practice of honoring stone stelaes were practiced by all people on the steppe, including Mongols, Turks, Scythians, Jurchens, Khitans, and Proto-Sino-Tibetans.

Achei genial.

@Actually_Tina I can only imagine the shards of zodiark will have some influence, good or bad) in the whitering halmarut spoke about. That or Calyx wants to study voidsent as a alternative to the endless in terms of immortality.
English

@Actually_Tina We're going back to the void/13th plot from post endwalker. That's why Estinien is there and the new trial is Enuou.
English

Ironically the most interesting character here is Estinien
G'raha, Krile, and Y'shtola are involved in the current plot
The Twins are there because we are going to Garlemand
Estinien is a mystery

@MentzerOcean @SandyofCthulhu 19 days, and he fought the Balrog for another 10. He was ressucted right about the time the Fellowship was leaving Lothlorien and arrived there soon after, where Galadriel gifted him his new robes and staff.
English

@SandyofCthulhu I never read the books, but how long was Gandalf dead? Because in the movie, it looked like 5 minutes before he became Gamdalf the White.
English

Gandalf's resurrection was one of the very few times that a resurrection worked in fiction. It worked in Narnia because it was a reflection of Christ's. I hated it when they resurrected Superman after his death, because I knew for a fact they wouldn't let him die so it was a stupid and moronic attempt to play on our emotions from the get-go. Let's not talk about Palpatine's.
memeslich 💀 dnd memes@memeslich
Should Gandalf have stayed dead??
English

@JoeBarney1517 @SandyofCthulhu And the Hobbit wasn't exactly a retcon as instead of just adding information in Tlotr he completly revised the original story. So all books since the 2nd edition are in-line with Tlotr. Unless you've read a 1st edition The Hobbit you'll see no retcons in Tlotr.
English

@JoeBarney1517 @SandyofCthulhu How is the ring a mcguffing if the whole story was specifically written about it?
Also Glorfindel wasn't a crossover because the Silmarillion wasn't published until 23 years after TLOTR and 4 years after Tolkien died.
