@JeremiahDJohns Tolkien calls that applicability. He hated allegory. Nothing in his work is meant by him to represent something or be a allegory to something. He wants the readers to take whatever lessons and interpretations of the text as they will.

I love Cormac McCarthy but I also feel like everybody clowning on this post just has a different axe to grind with Rufo, because "just not in the mood to get pounded by unrelenting nihilism for 350 pages" is a perfectly respectable reason to go read something else

@Caol_MacCormaic @dmsolano99 I don't think the last five pagea of anything can totally deconstruct the last 345 in that way. McCarthy seems to be a bit of a social darwinist, he belueved conflict and evolution were coterminous. Fighting and survival are both necessary for each other.

I maintain that the single most insufferable thing about New Yorkers is that they bewilderingly try to claim everything. This transcends politics—all New Yorkers do this. Yes, everyone has coffee. Everyone has convenience stores (nicer than your “bodegas”). Everyone has what you have and it’s usually cleaner and cheaper!

Tywin naming Tyrion Lannister as Hand while he rides to war in Game of Thrones is less a promotion and more a calculated test dressed as an opportunity.
For Tyrion, it feels like validation and recognition from Tywin Lannister, but it comes at a cost - King’s Landing is already unstable. Cersei Lannister failed to control Joffrey Baratheon… and Eddard Stark’s execution has ignited the realm.
Tywin knows exactly what he’s doing.
He leaves Tyrion in a city on the brink. Manage the king. Contain Cersei. Hold the capital together. Prove your worth… or fail like I expect you to.

The enemy doesnt have morale to be broken, nor discipline, their advantage is in mass. Mass is an effective weapon, but it relies on momentum.

@SandyofCthulhu That there is an external Evil to lie to Denethor or corrupt Gollum (or indeed an external Good that Gillum's final act served) is the point. An individual might not know what the right thing to so is, but there is an actual answer to that question.

What?! Let's look at actual fantasy:
Tolkien: Denethor is shades of gray. A good man ruined by lies of Sauron. Is Gollum good or bad? (The answer is yes.) Other examples abound.
Moorcock: Elric tortures and kills people, but in the end saves the multiverse. If you asked him if he was evil, he'd probably say yes.
Dunsany: is the King of Elfland good or evil? Is the magician in The Charwoman's Shadow good or evil?
Actual fantasy does not bear out Martin's simplistic analysis.

If a ninja claims they don't know Hatake Kakashi, they'd be looked at as green or ignorant. If a sorcerer claims to not know who Gojo Satoru is, it's automatically suspicious
