First, The Suez Canal is man made and owned by Egypt. The Panama Canal also man made and owned by Panama. Turkey does not charge a toll for passage through the Bosphorus. The Montreux Convention guarantees complete freedom of passage for merchant, civilian and commercial vessels in, explicitly prohibiting any arbitrary taxes or fees for simply transiting the strait. Turkey is permitted to collect limited service-based charges from vessels that pass through without stopping at a Turkish port. These fees are for sanitary health inspections, lighthouse services, rescue operations, towage, etc but ships who stop at a port are exempt from those charges. The Strait of Hormuz is not man made and Iran doesn't own it, what they're doing is illegal under international law. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea governs the Strait of Hormuz.
