The results in Hungary tend to confirm one of my strongly-held views, which is that terms like "illiberal democracy" can be usefully descriptive but the phrase "competitive authoritarianism" is just a contradiction in terms.

Hungary under Orbán was not a classic fascist or monarchical regime. It was a species of what political scientists call "competitive authoritarianism" — where elections are generally free, meaning not formally rigged, but held under extremely unfair conditions.

The unpredictability of assignments is what makes us miss things, not the number of hours worked. Sometimes things just come up and it’s our job to assist. Not a lot of discretion for flexibility there.

@REdebtlawyer Also from an associate standpoint I think it depends a lot on your dependability. If the partner knows they can depend on you they’re going to give you flexibility. But if you’re constantly missing deadlines they’re going to treat everything as a fire drill

I know several small firm owners that never go to their kids sporting events or birthday parties. Meanwhile, the most successful BigLaw partner I know doesn’t miss any of his daughter’s volleyball games or life events for children of his associates. I talked to a BigLaw associate yesterday who billed 2300 hours last year but ate dinner with his family and put his kids to be every night.
Those who want to make it work will find a way to make it work.

If the former: many Americans clearly agree with you. But people were legally allowed to pass through countries and seek asylum. There’s no law against it so they’re not here illegally, right?

A person who followed our asylum laws and is awaiting their hearing gets to have their hearing.
If you don’t like those laws, you’re free to try changing them through the legislative process. Otherwise, you and Stephen Miller can just keep crying about it on Twitter.

This reminds me of when Margaret Brennan "fact checked" me at the VP debate. If your position is that a person can claim asylum after traversing eight countries, and they are therefore "legal immigrants" because the president ignores the law and allows them to stay, then you're advocating for an open border. The Biden-Harris administration literally created an app (CBPOne) to digitize the violation of federal immigration law and allow anyone who claimed asylum to stay indefinitely. This is illegitimate, illegal, and the American people rejected it.

@dyingscribe I’m not a huge Sanderson fan, but you can’t discount how prolific he is. It’s a legitimate skill to write this much. People are invested in characters they spend a lot of time with.

“Tribal” has negative connotations and was misused so I understand that more. It’s like not using “crusade,” but more salient.

I think gender swapping Odysseus changes the story a lot. He’s a soldier returning from a war where only men fought. I don’t think Athena’s skin color changes anything.

-Odd Netflix inspired design work (ugly)

-Ellen Paige will play a man
-Nolan’s historical philosophy is not up to par, let’s say compared to Eggers
This will do extremely well, it will largely appeal to people who love Nolan and Batman. It’s just not made for lovers of Western canon, history, literature, philosophy. It’s made for the modern audience.

To summarize Swearer's argument: In 1863, Congress passed a law drafting immigrants who declared their intent to become citizens. Swearer argues that this means that Congress thought they had jurisdiction only over such aliens (rather than not wanting to recruit vacationers) And then she argues that this means, in 1868, when the 14th Amendment was ratified, this means that Congress understood jurisdiction of the United States as not applying to foreigners who had not yet filed a declaration of intent. And then she argues that this would mean the babies of people who had not filed a declaration of intent would also not be subject to the jurisdiction. And then she analogizes that declaration of intent to being a lawful permanent resident, as the new parental requirement for birthright citizenship.

Some of those people die, but I agree that saying “they would have lived but for the denial” is usually conjecture
