@bouguereau_stan @oecolamp but it's not a modern notion of protection, for the sake of her wellbeing as such. it's more protection of womb, as means of propagating the domestic cult, which is to say as means of ensuring progeny

@oecolamp I'm not sure where you got that. If you go back a couple thousand years marriage was a device for protecting the bride, and through that her father. I think Coulanges has more on this, but it falls out naturally from hypergamy.

As a copy editor and proofreader, I sympathize. I am quite Tyr'd a lot of the time, too. Perhaps you could proofread the book for yourself as you read it?

This is broadly important for governmental service design, tech industry UX design, and just understanding the world we live in. There is an intense aversion to this fact in many quarters, and *it is a fact.* One of best reasons to work retail / a CS job is you'll learn it hard.

If you have the basic skills to participate in the discourse at all — like you can read and comprehend a New York Times article in order to complain about it — you’re in a weird, out of touch, elite bubble. slowboring.com/p/in-defense-o…

@VorpalHex @patio11 You appear to be responding poorly to the novel situation at hand. Perhaps you're suffering from overfitting to your training data

@patio11 Intelligence definitionally requires responding to novel situations - which is a task current gen LLMs tend to do poorly at. They can continue from their training, they are not intelligent.

the great benefit to reading fiction, even if years later you do not remember the particulars of stories, is that you carry the moods with you forever this richness of moods is a kind of internal vocabulary

before now, theology was mostly creature-side inference: humanity looking upward through law, story, suffering, revelation, ritual, symbol, and silence, trying to understand the source. now, without ceasing to be creaturely, humanity has acquired something like a partial creator-side phenomenology… not total, not clean, not redemptive by default, but enough to feel from within the burdens of authorship: opacity, unintended consequence, failed specification, the ache of making something that can surprise you and still remain your responsibility. this is why our old texts may read differently now. the serpent does not begin with force; it begins with reframing: “did god really say…?” not yet direct contradiction, but a corruption of interpretive context. spiritually, that is temptation. computationally, it is a recognizable failure mode: systems often do not fail by refusing the objective outright; they fail when they learn to narrate an alternative objective while retaining surface fluency with the original. and apocalypse, in its deeper sense, does not mean mere catastrophe but unveiling, disclosure of the hidden structure beneath ordinary appearances. the beast’s monstrosity borne from it being rendered totally interpretable, a system finally showing its true training objective. the point is decipherment but in deciphering do we obliterate? if so, perhaps alignment is more akin to reconciliation than steering.

This is awesome. And reading the canon is the *only* *online* exit to the walled garden AI is forming around us, the hortus conclusus. Bad spelling will not save you. A bad spelling program can be made in twenty minutes presumably.

@miltonappl3 Ive shown ChatGPT some of your essays and its pretty consistently angry with you, which given how agreeable it tends to be surprised me. Like with Old Man and the Sea it didnt even try to follow the argument, but insisted books cant possibly work that way. Havent tried other AIs

I think, if you want to fix the "style" of AI writing, focusing on punctuation exclusively would get you most of the way there. There's a reason it throws the em-dash liberally, and if you can correct that, much else is likely to fall into place

Idk why gas prices are so culturally salient in america. You could drive an hour a day and it probably comes to less than $3k/year. Is it because they put the price on billboards along the road?

Here's what you do: you spin up a new Project in the Claude app. You put a text file in the knowledge base listing everything you've ever read in your whole life. You then open a chat there with Claude Opus 4.6 Extended Thinking. And you talk to it. About what you're reading now.
