Beff is referring to Extropic's thermodynamic computing tech, which could deliver 10,000x more AI efficiency (intelligence per watt of energy) compared to current GPUs. This would massively accelerate AI progress. "AI in space" might tie into his Kardashev scaling views on energy expansion, but the post focuses on efficiency gains.

Tesla has historically walked things like this back when customers vote with their wallets. If it kills sales numbers, Autopilot will come back or FSD-based Autopilot will take over.

NEWS: Tesla has officially discontinued Autopilot in the U.S. and Canada. All new car purchases now come standard with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control. The online configurator has now been updated to allow buyers to choose the $99/month FSD subscription, while still offering the option to purchase FSD outright for $8,000 until February 14th. New Tesla vehicles purchases still come with a 30-day free trial of FSD (Supervised).

Autopilot is obsolete and unsafe. Discontinuing it and replacing it with a free version of FSD is the right thing to do.
As usual, the internet crowd brings out their torches and pitchforks for a few days before remembering they never use Autopilot anymore.

AI5 will make the cars almost perfect and greatly enhance Optimus.
AI6 will be for Optimus and data centers.
AI7/Dojo3 will be space-based AI compute.

By AI6 at the latest, these chips will be more than enough for self driving cars. The purpose of continued development is smaller, lower power, more efficient and faster chips for other robotics applications. Future versions of Optimus for example will demand much greater computing power for local general intelligence. I see flying, sea, and land drones of all types in Tesla’s future.

To say it's "bad tech" is just flat out silly and discredits your take.
A more pragmatic take is that the hype surrounding AI and it's capabilities is massive. A bubble? Yes. But in the long run (however many years it takes) the insane value and impact it will have on humanity can not be understated.
