Q: How does the #Ebola virus spread from one person to another?
A: Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of an infected person, including someone who has died from the disease. It can also spread through contaminated objects such as bedding, clothing or medical equipment. Health workers and caregivers are at higher risk if infection prevention measures are not strictly followed.
Q: What are the common signs and symptoms of #Ebola infection?
A: Common symptoms include sudden fever, weakness, headache, muscle pain and sore throat. As the disease progresses, patients may develop vomiting, diarrhea, rash, stomach pain and, in some cases, bleeding. Symptoms can appear between 2 and 21 days after exposure to the virus.
Q: Which groups of people are most at risk of getting #Ebola?
A: People most at risk include hunters, family members caring for infected relatives, health workers without adequate protective equipment, laboratory personnel handling samples, and individuals involved in unsafe burial practices. Communities with frequent population movement or limited access to healthcare may also face increased risk during outbreaks.

#Hantavirus update:
- no new deaths in 20 days;
- the #Netherlands reported one additional case — a crew member who left the ship in Tenerife, was repatriated, and has been isolating since;
- total number of cases up to date 12, with three deaths (all before 2 May)
The situation is stabilising. @WHO is actively monitoring all quarantined passengers and crew alongside national governments. Surveillance will continue until the incubation period ends for everyone who was on board.

Two weeks ago, Andes Hantavirus dominated headlines: rare person-to-person transmission, cruise ship cluster hitting multiple countries, 3 deaths, and a French woman in critical condition on artificial lung in Paris.
No major new updates, but the virus is still out there.
The French patient remains a big unknown. This strain spreads between people, something most hantaviruses don’t do.
Why the quiet?
Ebola grabbed the spotlight with its PHEIC declaration.
Media chases the loudest emergency and moves on. But Hantavirus has real threat.
Contained for now, but quietly building.

Situation report of #Ebola disease outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo #DRC and #Uganda - data as of 18 May 2026:
🔴 A total of 528 suspected cases, including 132 deaths have been reported from both countries.
Of the 12 suspected cases reported from Uganda, two were confirmed through laboratory testing, while the rest tested negative.
A total of 668 contacts have so far been identified, including 541 in DRC and 127 in Uganda, although contact follow-up remains challenging in some areas of DRC due to insecurity and movement restrictions.
Numbers are rapidly changing as surveillance, contact tracing and laboratory testing are being scaled up.
🔴 Alert management and case investigations are being scaled up in the affected countries.
🔴 In DRC, a total of 38 experts (20 from Ministry of Health and 18 from WHO) have been deployed from Kinshasa to Bunia to support response operations.
🔴 Over 17 tons of emergency supplies were shipped to DRC, incl. personal protective equipment, medical supplies, tents, stretchers and medicines.
🔴 Laboratory capacity is being expanded, with deployment of lab teams and mobile laboratories to affected areas in DRC to increase local testing and diagnostic activities.
🔴 WHO, together with Alliance for International Medical Action @ALIMA_ORG, @MSF, @UNmigration and @ifrc, is supporting the setup of treatment facilities in affected areas.
🔴 Risk communications and community engagement is also being scaled up, to make sure communities are actively including in the response.

After having consulted the #DRC and #Uganda where the #Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus is known to be currently occurring, I determine that the epidemic constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), as defined in the provisions of IHR.

Highlights from Disease Outbreak News on #hantavirus linked to MV Hondius:
▪️ As of 8 May, a total of 8 cases, including 3 deaths, have been reported. 6 cases are confirmed as Andes virus. 4 patients are currently hospitalized. One case previously reported as suspected has now been reclassified as a non-case after testing negative for Andes (ANDV) virus through specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and serology.
▪️ Epidemiological investigations are underway to determine the source of exposure, including on the travel history and potential exposures of the first case.
▪️One expert from WHO, one from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (@ECDC_EU) are on board the cruise ship to provide support to the passengers, crews and ship operators during the journey.
▪️ WHO has developed and shared technical guidance documents in support of countries affected by the event, including covering management of the event on the ship, investigation of cases, disembarkation and management of returning passengers and crew members.
▪️ An adult male, who disembarked in Tristan da Cunha on 14 April, is currently stable and in isolation. He is currently a probable case until laboratory confirmation.
▪️ Passengers who travelled on the same flight from St Helena to South Africa along with one of the confirmed cases have been contacted.
👉🏽To date, 75 contacts have been identified in South Africa, of whom 42 have been traced by national authorities and are currently under monitoring.
Here is what WHO advises:
▪️ Countries involved in this event continue public health coordination and management efforts on board conveyances and in countries where cases and/or contacts are present or will be returning to. Early recognition of suspected cases, prompt isolation, and consistent adherence to recommended infection prevention and control measures remain essential to protect healthcare personnel, other passengers and crew members. Current evidence does not support usefulness of routine laboratory testing or quarantine of asymptomatic contacts.

So far, eight cases of #hantavirus have been reported, including three deaths.
While this is a serious incident, @WHO assesses the public health risk as low.
WHO will continue to work with all relevant governments and partners to provide care for those who are affected, protect the safety and dignity of passengers, and prevent onward spread of the virus.

Swiss authorities have confirmed a case of #hantavirus identified in a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship who presented to hospital in Zurich. The patient is currently receiving care at a hospital in Zurich, #Switzerland.
The patient had responded to an email from the ship’s operator informing the passengers of the health event.
In line with the International Health Regulations (IHR), @WHO is working with relevant countries to support international contact tracing, to ensure that those potentially exposed are monitored and that any further disease spread is limited.
The virus was confirmed as the Andes virus, a type of hantavirus found in South America, by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, South Africa and the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), Switzerland. The support of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Senegal and the Administración Nacional de Laboratorios e Institutos de Salud (ANLIS), Argentina has also been critical in responding to this event.
As of 6 May, there are 8 cases, 3 of whom are confirmed as hantavirus by laboratory testing.
WHO will continue to work with countries to ensure that the patients, contacts, passengers and crew have the information and support they need to stay safe and prevent spread.

WHO is aware of and supporting a public health event involving a cruise vessel sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. To date, one case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed, and there are five additional suspected cases. Of the six affected individuals, three have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa.
Detailed investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing, and epidemiological investigations. Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew. Sequencing of the virus is also ongoing.
Hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure (exposure to infected rodents’ urine or faeces). While rare, hantavirus may spread between people, and can lead to severe respiratory illness and requires careful patient monitoring, support and response.
WHO is facilitating coordination between Member States and the Ship’s operators for medical evacuation of two symptomatic passengers, as well as full public health risk assessment and support to the remaining passengers on board. WHO is grateful for the rapid actions and coordination.
We have informed our National Focal Points according to the International Health Regulations and a Disease Outbreak News for the public will be issued.
