From Chris Alexander, Executive Director, @NAACP New York State Conference, on yesterday’s #SCOTUS decision in the NY-11 case, in which petitioners argued that district diluted Black and Latino voting power: “The United States Supreme Court’s unprecedented decision to intervene in New York’s redistricting process threatens the fundamental right of New Yorkers to fully participate in our democracy. At a moment when voting rights protections are already under threat nationwide, it is a dangerous and extraordinary escalation for the Court to halt a lower court’s ruling that found New York’s 11th Congressional District unconstitutional for diluting communities of color voting power. By blocking that remedy, the Court is leaving Black and Latino Staten Islanders without a meaningful opportunity to choose who represents them in Congress. This comes as the Court considers Louisiana v. Callais, a case that could weaken Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and strip away one of the last federal safeguards against vote dilution. The Supreme Court should not be inserting itself to shield unconstitutional maps or determine who has real power at the ballot box. That overreach undermines equal representation and the integrity of our democracy.”

The mayor’s proposed 9.5% property tax increase has put fear into homeowners across the city. At a time when affordability is the number one issue in the country, people want a mayor who makes them feel secure not uncertain. This shows inexperience. If there’s a $5 billion deficit, how does proposing $77 million for a five-borough free grocery store program help balance the NYC budget?
