In hindsight, 2019 was an exceptionally eventful year for me. Traveled to 3 countries, & 3 states in India; took 4 months off; shifted to Dublin, living on my own for the first time; for @intercom, my first ever largeish company. Extremely grateful for this. Thank you, fate(?)!

Are there folks in my network currently working on voice agents for handling support cases? I’m not looking for a new tool nor building one, but I’d appreciate some advice. Specifically, I’m curious how your systems handle situations where a user refuses to engage with the AI and immediately asks to speak with a human.

today i found myself building a docker image with both python and ruby (don't ask me why) i was installing ruby with rvm on python-slim, but rvm was taking minutes downloading and compiling ruby i switched it up by installing python with uv on ruby-slim and it took just 1s 🤯

@xeraa @guidsen @elastic @IntercomEng @brian_scanlan @fergal_reid Yes, with 80k docs, and 200ish per tenant, brute force will be blazingly fast. Sentences might have too little information to give any benefit when encoded. I recommend starting out with paragraphs, maybe break them into smaller chunks if paragraphs are too long. And iterate.

filtering with HNSW is pretty expensive (funnily it makes it more expensive while most other searches get much faster with a filter). so if you only have a couple of thousand chunks each to rank, you might want to skip HNSW and just brute-force the vector similarity on those docs. will be faster and save a lot of HNSW overhead
