Stanford researchers are leveraging synthetic biology to address critical energy and environmental challenges. Their initiatives target multiple energy-related issues: developing cleaner mineral extraction methods for clean-energy technologies, reducing the environmental impact of meat production (a significant source of greenhouse gases), and creating sustainable alternatives to petroleum-dependent processes. Key energy-focused projects include engineering proteins to extract critical minerals and rare earth elements without petroleum products like kerosene, which currently generate toxic waste despite being used for clean-energy applications. Researchers are also converting plastic waste into palm oil components using green hydrogen, offering a dual environmental benefit by reducing landfill waste while providing sustainable alternatives to forest-clearing palm cultivation. Additionally, teams are developing nitrogen-fixing plants to reduce fertilizer dependency and reprogramming dandelions for large-scale rubber production, potentially eliminating the need for rainforest destruction.
