How to deliver brand guidelines? When I started out, my holy grail was the coffee-table brand book. Hardcover, perfect-bound, THE BRAND BIBLE. I had to realise my clientele didn't need that. Most of them are early-stage founders and small teams. The book would be outdated the week it came off the press. A beautiful artefact, a useless tool. So how to deliver brand guidelines? If your clientele looks similar to mine, here are some options. Start with what they already use. Before I pick a format, I ask what the team is already in. Canva? Figma? Framer? The answer decides the deliverable. Yes, it means I sometimes design in Canva. I don't enjoy it. But what I enjoy even less is nobody using the assets I designed. 🤷‍♀️ A few options: - Brand kit in Figma. The right call when there's also product UI library in the mix. Style libraries do the heavy lifting: fonts and colours defined once, available everywhere. the team reads the guidelines on the same canvas where they grab the assets. Figma Slides are a bonus, letting clients spin the identity into branded decks. - Brand kit in @framer. Sometimes the need for brand identity emerges when the company needs a website. If the website is the main touchpoint and you're designing and building it in Framer, the identity assets belong there too. Framer's Design Pages work as a big canvas where you can lay out and export social assets alongside the rest of the system. Styles and components are available too. - Brand kit in Canva. If the founder lives in Canva, meet them there. The brand kit is limited — you can't set letter-spacing rules on type, for example — but you get video export, animated social templates, and print-ready files without leaving the tool. - Hosted brand guideline sites. Easy to share, built for updating. The trade-off is the subscription and yet another site to log into. I haven't reached for one in my own work, but some designers swear by them. - Notion page. A good fit early-stage teams, bc founders already live in Notion. You can embed Figma frames, link to asset folders, and the client can edit it themselves as the brand evolves. The downside is... it looks like a Notion page. A long list of assets, but not a visually inspiring glimpse of the company we’re becoming. - PDF guidelines. Fine as one of the handoff artefacts. NOT enough on their own. A founder needs assets they can grab and tokens they can edit. A PDF is a snapshot. Your brand is a moving thing. - .md or .json files. An emerging format, legible to AI agents and LLMs. The idea is the client pastes it into Claude or similar and designs with the brand context baked in. I'm exploring this for my own work, but @emmettshine has written about it more than anyone. In my opinion, the right brand guidelines keep the assets one click away, in an environment you can design in. SVG, PNG, hex codes, font files. All of it grabbable, all of it editable, all of it where the design work actually happens. What's your favorite format?

*SEEKING SUMMER INTERN* I'm bringing on an intern this summer to work with me at the studio. Work on real pre-launch consumer products, and see the inner workings of a small design practice. Requires some IRL time in Berkeley, so likely a @UCBerkeley student. Apply below!
