OMB’s proposed overhaul of federal grant rules drew nearly HALF A MILLION public comments led by the scientific community - an extraordinary response and, as far as I can tell - among the largest public comment dockets ever for an OMB rulemaking.

@seanluomdphd @DrCatharineY Bringing Trump into it? The entire article was pointing out how this administration's policies are causing turmoil: creating uncertainty, cutting drastically, & pushing away immigrants. In the general sense you're probably right, but Trump's admin is hugely exacerbating the issue

One of the biggest threats to US innovation isn’t just research funding - it’s losing the next generation of scientists. Phd admissions at leading research universities fell 15% this year. Scientific talent takes years to cultivate. And the consequences will be felt for decades

@DrCatharineY I'm grateful that at least cyclospora is what's exposing the issue with scaling back FoodNet, not something a lot more infectious and/or a lot more deadly. Thank goodness for silver linings, I suppose.

@SuperMemoWoz @DrCatharineY Ah, that explains it. I generally agree that AI will force a re-evaluation of how we handle education; however, there are policy decisions being made in the US atm which are demolishing the available funds for higher education and research grants - that's what the OP was saying

@_pwep @DrCatharineY I am from Poland. We experienced a 40% drop in the interest in college in 2 decades. It will get worse. AI makes traditional education look horribly wasteful. The global impact will be an increase in intelligence and a rapid evolution of all educational institutions to adapt.

@SuperMemoWoz @DrCatharineY If this is a genuine question, I'll engage. Why is it happening right now, and is it truly natural or is it caused by the massive, unnatural drop in federal grants? Why only in the US, if natural? Also, what will be the consequence of a precipitous drop in PhD grads in 20 years?

@_pwep @DrCatharineY The change is natural. People like to learn, create and discover. The coercive school system ruins it all. College is boring and/or expensive. Opportunities keep multiplying. What do I not understand?

@seanluomdphd @DrCatharineY Genuine, informed, reasoned disagreement? Absolutely. People asserting that something must be good because it's happening while Trump is in power without giving any thought to whether that makes sense? Not so much.

@medickimw Serious question: so what? It's a mapping app. I'm no supporter of the Israeli government - just look at my profile - but I'm having a hard time understanding why this matters.

Dr. @CochavElkayam is the human rights lawyer who spent the last few years documenting the sexual violence committed against women and children on Oct 7th. Amy and I were proud to help sponsor this essential work 3 years ago and ensure it received an international hearing, including before the UN. While in Tel Aviv, I was honored to meet with Dr. Cochav Elkayam-Levy, the researchers, lawyers, and victims who helped document these horrific crimes. Their work @theCC07 ensured that the world could never look away.

It was good to meet with SACEUR General Grynkewich ahead of the NATO Summit in Ankara. At the Summit, our priority will be to turn rising defence budgets into real military power for our collective defence. To create a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO. We will also focus on Ukraine’s needs to defend itself. The battlefield momentum is shifting in Kyiv’s favour. In Ankara, NATO leaders will pledge further support to Ukraine to keep Moscow on the backfoot.

Canada and Romania are trusted Allies with a growing partnership in defence, security, and strategic industries. The successful conclusion of negotiations on our General Security of Information Agreement marks another step forward in strengthening that cooperation. I look forward to signing this agreement soon and advancing our shared security and prosperity.

@drgurner @bluewmist I certainly agree; I think both allowing yourself to be unnecessarily rushed and dragging out decision making are problematic. In my experience the former is more common among management (pressure flows downhill) and the latter is more common amongst ICs (analysis paralysis)

@_pwep @bluewmist People will drag things on forever. Very few people have an internal sense of urgency and getting things done, and there is a *big* difference between "rushed into a suboptimal decision," and knowing how to make decisions more quickly. Have some urgency or lose your seat.

@drgurner @bluewmist Imo there's a difference between having a sense of urgency and being rushed. You can think critically about the problem & not be rushed into a suboptimal solution, and still have a sense of urgency once committed. Resolve and conviction should make you move, not external pressure

@bluewmist This is not a cheat code for business. If you become "difficult to rush" you will lose your job. You need to have an internal sense of urgency.

The thing that bothers me the most is how the “reasoning” is clearly not improving. Am I missing something?
Jessica Pin@jess_ann_pin

@sama just fyi Chat GPT has not gotten any better at describing or reasoning about the clitoris since it came out in 2022. It is not just incorrect. It is incoherent. It still hallucinates that the clitoris is upset down, missing parts, has skin that is internal, etc. It is working like an authority based system of knowledge that has mixed up the incoherent authorities without imposing any realistic world model constraints so it cannot make any sense. “If an anatomy description breaks laws of physics, it is a bad explanation.” Given that Beginning of Infinity is your favorite book, surely you see the problem.

We also created Fluffy, the Mediocre Bombard (which shoots capybaras), George Crushington, and the Flying Purple Tapir, but they didn't have any specific purpose beyond being goofy and amusing the players. Basically our artists were bored near the end of the game's development and wanted to make fun units for YOU to play. The designers were on board, and in fact I had to do the database entries for some of them. I guess really some of these like the Learicorn are easter eggs, because you have to place them out of the scenario editor. You can't just type in a code. Did any of you enjoy these? What are your favorite cheat units or easter eggs? 10/10

I promised this morning to explain the origins of Age of Empires' cheat units. So here goes! First let's cover Age of Empires 1. The most awesome cheat unit is probably Winsett's Z (black) AND Winsett's Z (white). Scott Winsett (hi Scott!) was one of the two art leads we had at Ensemble Studios. Scott had a full life outside Ensemble and his beloved hobby was working on his car and (I assume) drag racing. So unsurprisingly his car made it into the game. Originally there was only his black car. Later, I believe unbeknownst to Scott, they added the white car which was actually better (higher rate of fire). No I'm not going to GIVE you the cheat codes. Jeeze. What's an internet for? 1/10

It took me a couple of days to read the latest @UN Commission of Inquiry's report on how Israel is deliberately targeting Palestinian children. I had to stop, again and again, just to breathe. The level of devastation, the detail, the evidence, it is overwhelming. The findings are devastating and unequivocal: Israeli authorities and security forces have deliberately targeted Palestinian children, resulting in genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in #Gaza, and war crimes in the occupied West Bank. At @Amnesty, we documented the genocide in Gaza in our report published in December 2024, and more recently detailed evidence of ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. We know the patterns. We have exposed the atrocities. Yet reading this report still shakes you to the core. It goes deeper into the intent, into the systematic nature of the violence, into the unbearable reality that children themselves are being targeted. This is not collateral damage. This is not incidental. This is deliberate. Children, killed, maimed, traumatized, deprived not only of safety, but of any possibility of a future. Entire generations being erased in plain sight. How much more evidence does the world need? How many more reports must confirm what is already undeniable? Governments cannot continue to look away. Silence and inaction, in this moment, are complicity. This must end. Israel must be held fully accountable. 🔗ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

@SpencrGreenberg And even after this, I would add the caveat that you need to evaluate what it's saying with a critical eye, and ideally get opinions from others as well. And if the conversation goes on for a long time, you might need to re-enter this prompt into a new chat, because it'll forget

Tell it: I'm going to provide you with information about a social interaction I had with another person. I want you to help me understand what happened in this situation, ways the other person could have behaved better, ways I could have behaved better, what the other person was most likely thinking during it, and why it went the way it did. Carefully consider the perspective of each person involved before coming to any conclusions. My priority is to know the truth about what happened (and to understand how to make things go better in the future), even if it turns out I was in the wrong in this case. Start by asking me 3 to 6 clarifying questions to help make sure you understand the important aspects of the situation well before you conduct your analyses of the situation (prioritizing the most important information you need to know to understand the situation well). Here's the social situation that took place: [then put the details here]

More and more people are using LLMs like Claude/ChatGPT to analyze social interactions, such as to break down why someone acted like that, or to say who was in the wrong. But if you aren't careful, using them this way is likely to mislead you. To get more accurate results: 🧵

@burkov Why the hate? I'm not sure I agree with their choice, nor am I sure how it'll turn out. Still, I'm excited for the novel approach...but even if you're not, "pathetic clown" seems hyperbolic. Also, the composer said that; I'm not sure that was necessarily Nolan's reasoning also.

@CassandraRules Lower interest rates would just continue to allow inflation to grow, making daily life harder for everyone in the medium term and making the crash so much worse when it hits. if lowering rates was the solution we wouldn't be having inflation issues now; we've BEEN cutting them
