One of the strangest cultural differences between when I was young and now was how cigarette smoking was completely normalized back then.
More than half of all adults smoked cigarettes, indoors, in the car, the doctor's office, everywhere.
The idea that you light a plant on fire and inhale its witches brew of toxic chemicals and that this was all accepted as something normal astonishes me now.

A typical day in the UK
You wake up in a house you paid tax to buy, then pay council tax every month to live in. You turn on the TV, which is taxed & you pay to watch it
You drive a heavily taxed car, fill it with taxed petrol, pay insurance tax & congestion charges, to go to work
Where you pay 50% income to tax and NI (tax)
You buy something & it’s 20% VAT after you just paid 50% to earn it.
You want a holiday? Airport & flight & hotel taxes
Cigarettes & alcohol are taxed & then when you die, 40% inheritance tax
No wonder everyone is leaving for Dubai
