A new report released by the Greens has revealed that if a rent freeze had been implemented last year, Aussies would have saved up to $3,000 per household.   Jordan van de Berg, AKA @PurplePingers, joins us.

@MChandlerMather No chance the average increase to rent was around $60 a week Freeze the rent and more landlords will sell up and their will be fewer properties to rent…which will make rent go higher Not all investors are the PM

If Labor had frozen rents two years ago renters would have saved $6.7 billion in rent increases or $3067 on average per household. Renters are now facing another $5.3 billion in increases in the next year alone. That's $2.5k per household. Freeze and cap rents now.

@MChandlerMather So your argument is developers should be building whilst construction costs are so high that the project is not feasible and they would lose money and eventual go out of business? So then there’s less comp and another developer could charge more because then there’s less supply?

Developers have decided that despite rising house prices and rents it is not profitable enough to build right now. Not to worry! By constricting supply developers will help drive up prices enough for it to be profitable to build. Pretty broken right? So what to do?

Australia has one of the least affordable housing systems in the world. That’s what the government’s own report said today. In fact Aus has the 2nd highest rent increases and biggest mortgage costs of advanced economies. It gets worse….

@AvidCommentator Those RPData “values” give a range of about 30%, it’s a wide range, don’t think this portfolio is anything to worry about at all

My prediction? In the not-too-distant future… forget homeownership, renting will be the aspiration — as is the state of the housing crisis

I'm hearing similar from agents and mortgage brokers. It is what it is.
Upendra@Narsingani

@AvidCommentator RBA is giving the wrong impression to the people that the rate will not go up by pausing it. I am following many RE groups on WhatsApp and FB and they all talk about the rate going to go down and looking for opportunities to buy instead sell.

Deutsche Bank's just released a note saying there's a strong correlation between the RBA's QE/money printing program and inflation In other words, it created the problem it's trying to fix

@cmkusher What’s wrong with a pause to then wait and see how all the increases pan out? Or they don’t actually hike again, I’d bet a pause

I'd be keen to hear what other people think but I don't understand the logic that the RBA would pause interest rate hikes next meeting if you expect them to increase them either the following meeting or at some point shortly thereafter. Thoughts?

@cmkusher Why would a pause then a further hike be a bad look? What’s wrong with pause and see what happens with data from there?

Some chatter about interest rate hike pause next month which as a mortgage holder I'd appreciate it but I can't help but think how bad of a look it'd be if RBA paused hiking and then had to recommence.

The local data confirm that the peak and then start of the free fall in inflation around the middle / Q3 2022 is now showing up in the local CPI. Much much more to come in terms of disinflation

If I didn't know any better I'd say the RBA's now trying to spook households into cutting back their spending

To display your success as a leveraged property owner, you need to get more financing to buy a large European SUV. This will symbolize to other leveraged property owners that you are part of their exclusive club.

Sometimes I like to wonder about a different Australia, one where every spare dollar my Mrs and I have isn't being sucked in to be used for a seemingly ever increasing house deposit. It sure would be nice to spend my money on something else like eating out or at a hobby shop.
