A formal UN communication has raised serious concerns over the political and human rights situation in Bangladesh, particularly the ban on the Awami League and the use of anti-terror and tribunal laws against its members. The UN flagged issues including mass arrests, restrictions on political speech and assembly, and alleged violations of fair trial rights. These developments point to a shrinking democratic space, where opposition voices are being sidelined and due process is increasingly questioned. As the country approaches a critical political juncture, the international community is being urged to closely monitor the situation and ensure that fundamental rights and democratic principles are upheld. albd.org/articles/news/… #AwamiLeague #Bangladesh #HumanRights albd.org/articles/news/…

Like my constituents, I was deeply disappointed to see that COP30 did not deliver any new pledges to cut fossil fuels. This was despite the best efforts of the UK and many of our international partners. In Parliament yesterday, I called on Ed Miliband to ensure the COP30 agreements do not become a loophole for climate inaction.

I loved meeting so many constituents at the #GreenFuturesEvent today! This was a careers fair organised by @TheLCAI, showing students and adults the incredible job opportunities available in the green economy. I had some really interesting conversations with local businesses and charities about the work they are doing to clean up London's air, increase biodiversity and tackle climate change. I wish there were events like these when I was younger!

Journalists, writers, filmmakers, and civil society members have been unlawfully detained through authoritarian measures orchestrated by @Yunus_Centre. The charges are unfounded, and those affected have been deprived of their right to a fair trial. This raises a pressing question: what role have @UNHCR_BGD, @EUinBangladesh, @UNHumanRights, @FCDOGovUK, and other organizations undertaken in responding to such violations under Yunus’s regime?

Freedom of expression in Bangladesh has hit a new low under Yunus today, breaking even his own previous record.

The E.U. to provide €4 million for int’l standard #elections in #Bangladesh; but can more funding make an essentially non-participatory, non-inclusive polls acceptable internationally? After a meeting the Election Commission officials today, the European Union’s envoy to Bangaldesh Michael Miller said: “Today, I have come specifically to inform the Bangladesh Election Commission that the European Union will provide more than 4 million Euros in support so that Bangladesh can organise elections in line with international standards”. See: bdnews24.com/bangladesh/c2b… While the EU deserves praise for their offer of assistance to Bangladesh with the upcoming elections, surely the EU cannot believe that a non-inclusive and non-participatory election, like the one Bangladesh is headed towards without the #AwamiLeague, can conform to “int’l standards”! The all important “inclusive and participatory” features of the next election has been severely affected by the Interim Govt’s decision to indefinitely ban the activities of the #AwamiLeague, one of only two major political parties in Bangladesh. The ban was swiftly followed by the Election Commission cancelling the registration of the party. International Standards According to the letter and spirit of the int’l guidelines and best practices, inclusiveness in elections refers to the extent to which all eligible voices, esp. those representing significant segments of the population, can participate freely and fairly. Thus, when a major political party like the AL is banned: - Voter Choice is Severely Limited: Voters who align with the party’s ideology are deprived of meaningful representation. If data from all credible previous elections are analysed, AL and its allies command around 35-40% of votes in Bangladesh. What happens to these voices? - Political Competition is Reduced: A ban often benefits ruling parties or dominant interests, skewing the playing field. In this case the exclusion benefits the #NCP, #BNP, #JamaatEIslami, and other #Islamist parties, all considered traditional rivals of the AL. - Public Trust May Erode: Such a move can be perceived as undemocratic or authoritarian, reducing confidence in the electoral process. Already, the cancellation of the registration of the AL by the Election Commission following the faulty ban on the activities of the AL has made many consider the next elections to be a foregone conclusion. - Stability and Nat’l Legitimacy: Banning a major party like the AL severely restricts voter choice, undermining the legitimacy of both the election process and the resulting govt. It could also lead to boycotts, protests, or civil unrest both during and post elections. Thus, while the people of Bangladesh are grateful for the financial support the EU has pledged, their primary focus should be to use their considerable influence to advocate for a free, fair, credible, inclusive and participatory election, one which does not exclude one of only two major political parties and disenfranchise such a significant segment of the electorate. …. @EPDeu @paulocasaca1 @CJBdingo25 @eu_eeas @kajakallas @CWhiteleyEU @EUinBangladesh @EU_Commission #EU @EUParl_EN #BangladeshCrisis #Elections #Democracy @IRIglobal @NDI @DemocracyIntl @GERonSouthAsia @Int_IDEA @MichaelKugelman @geoffreymacdon @AFP @DerekJGrossman @WFD_Democracy @EUCouncil
