In this post, Jawar Mohamoud is unusually articulating a newly found imperial position. Treating Baydhabo, a region in southwest Somalia, as Ethiopia’s strategic buffer zone, makes Abiy appear more progressive than the hitherto activist turned- ambitious-politician a bit dated. Here lies glaringly the difference between revolutionaries and political carpetbaggers: the former observes values in all situations and the latter hunts for opportunities at any cost. In the rush to paint Abiy as a weak leader, Jawar forgot that he has offended or at least interfered in Somalia’s affairs. Given the complexity of the region, Jawar’s comment could also make Eritreans think twice. May this not be a death knell to future cooperation b/w change seekers in the region.

@sholard_mancity Your statement is based on bias and prejudices against the Somalis. Why do you capitalise an isolated incident in Eastleigh ? It is wrong to assume that Eastleigh must have zero crime rate. Eastleigh is not a den for angles but an urban centre with a lot of challenges.

I’ve just watched that Eastleigh video of a Somali guy stabbing a fellow Somali guy to death, and all I'll say is; Eastleigh is a ticking time bomb. And the scary part? We are all acting like it’s normal. Muqdisho is an example.

@briansureobino A good question: 1. No Luo Member of Parliament has ever contested in our constituencies. 2. The Luo community aspires to attain the highest political office in the nation, hence attracting others. 3. The Luo are comparatively less tribalist than the Somalis. My humble take.

If Luos can elect a Somali Muslim MP in Luo Land, for example Junet Mohammed in Suna East. Why can’t Somalis elect a Luo MP in North Eastern?

It was symbolism without substance—compassion without follow-through. Her trust, once given in good faith, has been broken. And she is not alone. For many, this experience reinforces a deeper disillusionment—that the suffering of ordinary people is too often used as a stepping stone for political ambition. He may celebrate a battlefield victory today. But the more consequential battle the one for legitimacy, stability, and the trust of the people has already been lost. In the end, he risks being remembered not for promises made, but for opportunities squandered; not for protecting his people, but for presiding over their continued hardship, displacement, and despair.
