SP won by 54,000 votes. The people living right there, next to that temple, they didn't vote for BJP. That's when it became clear. The religion card wasn't working anymore. If it failed in Ayodhya of all places, it was finished everywhere. Even the BJP knew this. Hard to miss a slap that loud. The Modi wave that swept 2014, that magic was gone too. People had seen the show too many times. So they needed a new plan. They didn't drop the old act though. The temple visits continued. Hindus are in danger kept playing on loop. Modi's rallies, the boat rides, the jhalmuri stops, all of it kept going. But not because it was winning votes. It was just keeping up appearances. Making it look like the love was still there. The real plan was something else entirely. Go to any constituency before a state election. Talk to people. The anger was visible. Opposition rallies were overflowing. BJP leaders were being questioned, heckled. Local workers, journalists, auto drivers, shopkeepers, everyone was reading the same mood. Change is coming this time. You could feel it. Then the results would come. And nothing matched. Places where the opposition had been clearly ahead, where their own workers were confident, where the crowds had shown up in numbers, would return BJP wins. Comfortable ones sometimes. The numbers didn't fit anything anyone had seen or heard. People would stand there confused, looking at results that felt like they belonged to a different election fought in a different country. This is where the EVMs come in. And the SIR. And the quiet deletions from voter rolls. And the disenfranchisement that nobody talks about loudly enough. All of it working in the background while the jhalmuri stops and boat rides kept the cameras busy up front. Two things running at the same time. The performance, to make you believe India still wants this. And the machinery, to make sure the results say so regardless. The votes aren't there anymore. But somehow the wins keep coming.
