#Pakistan’s role in securing peace in the #MiddleEast deserves recognition. Yet the economic aftershocks of war linger. Oil markets remain tight, price volatility persists, and supply chains are still adjusting. Countries dependent on imported fuel are reshaping their #energy systems, going for nuclear, coal and/or renewables. Pakistan should explore the full potential of #solar. Instead of treating solar as a threat to the system, we should see it as part of the answer to repeated imported fuel shocks. A well-managed expansion of solar, together with investment in storage, grid modernisation and better pricing design, would reduce exposure to volatile oil markets, ease pressure on the import bill and strengthen energy security over time. thenews.pk/print/1408904-…

A big relief for world as sanity prevails and #Peace is being given a chance. This is a moment shows that even in a fractured world, space exists for countries that choose to build bridges rather than burn them. Thank you both to the Prime Minister @CMShehbaz and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their tireless efforts to negotiate this #ceasefire. #Pakistan’s ability to remain engaged with all sides while keeping channels open in a fragmented global environment, proved to be a big asset. Looking forward to the positive outcomes of Islamabad Peace Summit on 10th April. @OfficialDGISPR

PM announces Rs80 per liter reduction in petrol price I hope the #IMF’s was taken into confidence before reduction in petroleum development levy. Otherwise this good intended move may turn #Pakistan’s current IMF program challenging and complicating.

#BrentCrude is on rise. In #Pakistan Diesel price increased by Rs 184.49 per litre and Petrol price increased by Rs 137.24 per litre. Like every other citizen, I too feel the burden of higher #PetroleumPrices. No one welcomes such an increase. But the government has to act within the limits of economic reality. It simply cannot continue to provide a subsidy of Rs250 billion a month, nor can it afford to put the IMF programme at risk. Given Pakistan’s dependence on energy imports from the Middle East, its limited foreign exchange reserves, high debt burden, and fragile external position, absorbing such a shock indefinitely was never fiscally sustainable. This is also why international observers, including The Economist (see the chart below), have pointed to Pakistan as one of the countries most exposed to the regional energy crisis. In these circumstances, passing on the increase was not a matter of choice so much as of necessity. That said, economic necessity does not reduce the hardship this creates for ordinary people. Higher fuel prices feed into transport costs, food prices, and the daily expenses of households already under strain. For that reason, the government’s responsibility does not end with a price adjustment. It must ensure that whatever relief or subsidy support has been announced is targeted well, reaches the deserving segments efficiently, and protects the low income households.

📣Pakistan’s glaciers are not just landscapes, they are critical water towers sustaining the Indus Basin and millions of livelihoods across the region. Yet, accelerated glacier retreat, shifting precipitation patterns, and rising #GLOF risks are reshaping our water security future. A key but often overlooked driver is #BlackCarbon (BC) from regional emissions that accelerates glacier melt by reducing snow reflectivity. In the HKH region, a significant share of BC originates from #SouthAsia, intensifying risks for Pakistan’s northern ecosystems and downstream communities. Despite these growing threats, 🇵🇰 currently lacks a comprehensive glacier adaptation framework, one that integrates climate science, risk governance and basin-level planning. 📣 To address this gap, SDPI is convening a multi-stakeholder consultation to co-develop a Glacier Adaptation Plan for Pakistan. 🗓 April 7, 2026 ⏰ 11:00 AM – 01:00 PM (PKT) 📍 SDPI, Islamabad 🚨RSVP to attend in-person lnkd.in/dAgMRpnU 💡 This consultation will focus on: • Glacier retreat, GLOF risks & water security implications • Role of black carbon in accelerating glacier melt • Technical, nature-based & institutional adaptation measures • Strengthening early warning systems & risk governance • Defining priorities for a national glacier adaptation framework 🎯 Expected outcomes include: • Policy inputs towards Glacier Adaptation Plan • Identification of adaptation gaps and priority actions • Draft framework for Pakistan’s Glacier Adaptation Plan #ClimateChange #Glaciers #GLOF #WaterSecurity #ClimatePolicy #Adaptation #SDPI #ClimateResilience

The seminar titled “#Monsoon Outlook 2026 and Need for Timely #Action”, was organized by SDPI. The experts called for an #early #preparedness & coordinated national action ahead of the 2026 monsoon season, warning that climate variability, #glacier risks, urban #encroachments, and weak drainage systems could amplify disaster impacts across Pakistan. @nmemon2004

“Pakistan’s real transformation depends not on policymaking alone but on effective, citizen‑centred governance,” said Prof. Ahsan Iqbal @betterpakistan, Federal Minister @PlanComPakistan, at a @SDPIPakistan–UNDP policy dialogue in Islamabad. He stressed that empowered local governments are essential, as provincial capitals cannot address challenges in remote districts. The dialogue, opened by @AbidSuleri, Executive Director @SDPIPakistan, featured insights from Dr. @SamuelRizk, Resident Representative and @Van_ntn, Deputy Resident Representative #UNDPinPakistan; @MattdClancy, Group Head – Governance & Inclusion, @ukinpakistan and governance expert Suleman Ghani, highlighting evidence-based reforms, digital transformation, and stronger institutions. Presentations highlighted UNDP’s Risk Governance Framework in Sindh and Own-Source Revenue initiatives in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

As the #MiddleEast war enters its 5th week, #Pakistan’s debate remains focused on oil and gas. Today I argues for @thenews_intl that the conflict also carries serious #FoodSecurity risks through #fertiliser, gas, freight and household budgets. Food crises are not only scarcity of grains. They begin when the cost of producing, transporting and cooking food starts to rise. That is when the war can become painfully local. thenews.pk/print/1407413-…

thenews.pk/tns/detail/140… @TheEconomist has ranked #Pakistan as the 2nd most vulnerable emerging economy to #MiddleEastEnergyCrisis”. I have argued for @thenews_intl today that it is not energy only; more than half of our remittances (macroeconomy), and fertlizer supply (food security) depends on this region. The problem is not only that the world has become more unstable. It is that Pakistan remains too exposed to instability elsewhere. The war has revealed the cost of treating resilience as an afterthought. Resilience is not a slogan. It is a practical economic strategy.
