What are the different categories of rights? What is a fundamental right? an unalienable right? Know your rights. May 1927, The Supreme Court upholds compulsory sterilization in Buck v. Bell. Virginia had a eugenics law allowing state-enforced sterilization. Carrie Buck of Virginia was a patient of a mental institution facing a forced-sterilization. She protested. Her case eventually came before the supreme court where she lost in what became the most famous eugenics case in Supreme Court History. Justice Holmes, penned the decision saying, “being swamped with incompetence . . . three generations of imbeciles are enough.” Later commentators claim Carrie Buck may have tested below-average in intelligence but was not mentally handicapped. This case spoke to whom is allowed to reproduce and government control over reproductive rights when it's someone considered "less than". Eugenics dehumanizes humans who are differently abled, thus contributing to the discussion about which humans get human rights. #eugenics #abortiondebate #abortionmuseum

@RepPettersen More than 1 in 10 women who take mifepristone will end up in the emergency room with severe, potentially life-altering or fatal, effects. Why is this the standard of care for Americans? Do better.

As more states ban reproductive health care, CO has already seen an influx of patients from across the country. And limiting access to mifepristone will mean just one fewer option for care. That’s why I signed onto an amicus brief before the Supreme Court to defend access to Mifepristone. The FDA has affirmed it is safe and effective — taking this option off the table will only limit women's care options and further strain our system.

@RepCasar Mifepristone causes more than 1 in 10 women to need emergency room care with severe adverse effects. Based on 2025 numbers, this will send 73,000 women to ER with potentially life-altering or fatal injuries from mifepristone. How is that pro-women?

In my home state of Texas, women have already died from being denied abortion care. The far-right attack on mifepristone is an attack on the freedom of Americans to make decisions about their own bodies and their own health care.  We’ll keep fighting until we restore abortion rights nationwide.

Are you willing to truly look at abortion? Do the studies, track all the data? We don't know as much as we should because tracking isn't done. Why not? If there is nothing morally wrong with abortion, if it's just a medical procedure, we should track it and document results.

Mifepristone is safer than Tylenol yet radical, right-wing judges emboldened by Trump and Republicans are once again weaponizing the law against women seeking abortion care. Abortion is health care. My great grandmother died because abortion was illegal. To restrict the use of safe medication is unconscionable and will cost lives.

A horrifying story recently came to light in a public discussion with author Olivia Maurel. While she was discussing her up-coming book that deals with surrogacy (Where Are You Mommy?), she related an example of how surrogacy can encourage or allow eugenics. A couple forced a surrogate mother to abort the baby she was carrying in the third trimester because an ultrasound revealed the child was missing two fingers. It was a small deformity, not life altering, but the parents didn't want a "less than perfect" child. She tried to fight for the baby, offering to raise it herself. The couple declined and threatened her with punitive lawsuits in order to compel her to abort. What is eugenics? Eugenics is the deliberate reduction of certain genes from the gene pool by sterilization or abortion, usually people with disabilities or historically people of color or in poverty. It is the systematic dehumanizing of people based on physical or external characteristics. Eugenics is what the Nazis practiced, killing Jews and gypsies, homosexuals, and the disabled. This story brings up a lot of difficult questions for discussion: Is abortion effectively a method of eugenics today? Are eugenic abortions ableist? Should this surrogate have been forced to abort a baby that was viable? Should we continue the practice of surrogacy? What protections should be in place for the women and children in surrogacy? We look forward to a respectable dialogue in the comments. #abortiondebate #surrogacy #abortionmuseum

@RonWyden It’s not about science? The pill is not safe for a woman with an ectopic pregnancy. It’s not safe if there is a multiple pregnancy. It’s not safe if she is more than 10 weeks pregnant. That is the science, and why it should require an in-person doctor’s visit.

This ruling amounts to a nationwide abortion ban. Mifepristone is safe, full stop. This isn’t about science and protecting women, it’s a calculated plot by Republicans obsessed with controlling the private health care decisions of women in America.

@SenatorHick The stay reverts to the previous FDA rules. It does not make the drugs illegal. And 10.93% of women suffer from a severe adverse effect and end up in the ER following their current protocols. Shouldn’t we revert to the prior safety guidelines?

@RepLaMonica Requiring a woman to be seen by a doctor to get a prescription that can lead to severe or fatal outcomes if she is pregnant with multiples, is past 10 weeks, or has an ectopic pregnancy seems to be the definition of trying to protect women....

Blocking access to Mifepristone, a safe and FDA-approved medication, does not protect women; it makes us less safe.  Reproductive rights and access to abortion save lives. We will not stand idly by as judges make decisions that should only belong to patients and their doctors.

@NewJerseyOAG The ruling didn't make the drug illegal. It made it a requirement to see a doctor in person to get the prescription so the dr. can make sure the pregnancy is in the uterus, under 10 weeks, and not a multiple. These are all important reasons not to allow mail order abortion meds.

The Fifth Circuit’s outrageous decision will make it harder for many women to access mifepristone. Here in New Jersey, mifepristone is still legal. We will always stand up for patients’ access to essential reproductive health care.

@ReproRights It's medically unnecessary to see a doctor to make sure the pregnancy is in the uterus? or is under the 10 week limit? or is not a multiple? These are the reasons for in-person prescribing: keeping women safe. Ruling doesn't make the pills illegal, just requires a doctor visit.

@RepPressley Mailing it across state lines violates state sovereignty, and prescribing it without an in-person exam increases the risks of severe adverse effects for women who are further along than 10 weeks, have an ectopic pregnancy or pregnant with multiples.
