@BMFiore2 modern code wants framing sized to resist deflection; far above the lumber’s actual carrying capacity. the old guys were just cheap; only use enough to just get the job done. along with all the sketchy old stuff, there are some done very well. it’s the standards that changed

@BMFiore2 yeah, but old growth isn’t so much stronger than modern farmed lumber that it makes a significant difference. wood is a super resilient construction material, it will deflect a ton before failing. the old guys knew what they were doing, they just didn’t care about future sagging

ok hear me out if you have eg a house with two aboveground floors and an attic can you simply jack the roof up and add another floor on top where the attic is now and make that the new attic

@BMFiore2 yeah, i’ve learned through years of remodeling early 20th century homes that ideas about “the good old days” of construction are generally fantasy. lots of bad building practices and under-engineered framing specs back then

@JudgeCaulfield @aboveavgname @eigenrobot @AStratelates @selentelechia I would disagree here; balloon framing with those big old 20+ ft true 2x4 timbers is actually more suitable to go on top than platform home because there is no "hinge point" halfway up.Platform home likely need shear walls added on 2f (plywood under drywall or diagonal bracing)

@aboveavgname @eigenrobot @AStratelates @selentelechia It’ll also depend on the framing of the existing house. If your house is old and balloon-framed it is challenging to add on top because the stud walls of the third floor would act as a lever. If your house is platform framed I think this isn’t an issue.

@kenthesimp @eigenrobot kinda brings into question how, exactly, you feel about your own life, doesn’t it? without the seeking out of others to compare to beneficially, would there be a comfortable/confident relationship to yourself?

When I was a kid, I genuinely believed this was where we'd all be living by now. Do kids today have some sci-fi vision of the future, or was that just my generation?

Im kind of shocked how small total annual trade value of Lithium is. Chile, the world's largest exporter, hadnt topped $1 billion/yr yet in 2021. World oil trade is ~$1 trillion/yr. Lots of countries export $10s of billions/yr. Minerals demand for EVs just doesnt compare to oil
