Town of Burgeo help prevent ghost-gear by responsibly disposing of your used fishing gear. Bring any old nets, ropes, traps, cages, and pots to us at the lot next to the Fire Hall between 10am - 4pm tomorrow (Tuesday). All gear collected will be recycled.

AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES Q&A We’ve discovered vase tunicate (Ciona intestinalis) in the waters around Burgeo. As this is first documentation of this aquatic invasive species in the region we want to ensure all fishers, boaters, and residents are informed about this discovery. 1/2

There is a very interesting and innovative initiative taking place, looking at marine biomass in Elmastukwek (Bay of Islands). A public meeting is being held to share details of this exciting research. See attached image for more information

We are organizing collection events in Burgeo and Port aux Basques regions to collect end-of-life fishing gear. This will prevent it from potentially becoming ghost gear. More details next week on how fishers can dispose of there end-of-life gear through these events. 2/2

COLLECTION OF END OF LIFE FISHING GEAR "Ghost gear" is abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear that when in the sea continues to fish and entangle marine life. One source of ghost gear is gear stored on land, but washed out to sea during extreme weather events 1/2

We were part of this important work, having surveyed culverts throughout western NL, Burgeo highway, Hampton, Baie Verte & Springdale regions. We look forward to now working with @FishOceansCAN to restore connectivity in areas where barriers to fish passage have been identified

There are many issues, ranging from stream bank erosion / siltation to obstructions to passage, that affect fish habitat on our streams and rivers. We’ve used a drone to survey waterways in & around Hare Bay on Great Northern Peninsula, as part of a project funded by @FCAS_FCSA

PUBLIC CONSULTANTS ON WIND ENERGY PROJECT This coming week World Energy will be holding a series of public consultations on proposed wind energy project. Note: we are not involved with this proposed project, just sharing the public notice for those that might be interested.

This week our staff had the opportunity to attend the Workshop on Advanced Benthic Surveying Tools for Marine Science. The workshop offered an amazing experience learning about the latest tools and methods for sample and imagery collection, annotation and data management.

Excellent day of meetings with Provincial Ghost Gear Working Group. This summer we, supported by Coastal Action, will conduct shoreline and deep water cleanups throughout the south & southwest coasts to retrieve abandon or lost fishing gear (and any other debris we encounter).
