@cwrichardson @bashu_thanks I agree re: the vernacular, it causes parents to have unrealistic expectations of their baby's communication abilities. 2 word phrases don't start until around 18m. The OP's nephew is labeling things to a communication partner at 10 months, he's WAY ahead of the game.

my brother claims his 10 month old son cannot speak. HOWEVER, when he sees the cat, he says "ka! ka!" excitedly, and points at the cat, who runs away. I maintain that his first word is "cat". My brother says that does not count as speaking. Help us resolve this dispute.

@cwrichardson @bashu_thanks Single words are speech- the baby is approximating the word for cat (/ka/) whenever he sees the cat. He's made the connection that those sounds in that sequence label the object (cat). He just isn't capable of producing consonant vowel consonant combos yet motorically.

@bashu_thanks I don’t think we normally count saying a single word (or even several words) as speaking. When one asks of another’s child, “is he speaking yet”, my experience is we’d get “no, but he knows a few words” or something similar :)
