Atlanta Braves Grant Holmes had 18 freaking whiffs on 64 pitches, leading to a 28.1% swinging-strike rate on Thursday against the Pirates. Holmes's slider was dominant again with a whopping 50% swinging-strike rate.
🥵Holmes was generating whiffs and chases (50%) via the slider while throwing it in the zone 23% of the time
🛝9 of Holmes's 13 slider whiffs came low and below the zone to both sides of the plate
⁉️The main question mark is whether the slider (.250 wOBA, .273 xwOBA), curveball (.262 wOBA, .272 xwOBA), and cutter (.279 wOBA, .306 xwOBA) will remain effective against left-handed hitters since Holmes's arsenal tends to be more fruitful against right-handed hitters

Atlanta Braves pitcher Grant Holmes was decent in the first half (3.70 ERA, 3.75 xERA, 37% ball rate, 13.3% swinging-strike rate) before suffering an elbow injury in late July, when he missed over two months. Holmes's slider was dominant with a 26.3% swinging-strike rate on Saturday against the Orioles. He was peppering the slider low and below the zone against right-handed hitters. Holmes was relying on the slider 45.3% of the time against righties and 26.4% to left-handed hitters. If Holmes stays healthy, he's somewhat of a one-pitch pitcher via the slider.

@erik_halterman @CPTowers I can’t be sure all these reactions are in good faith, but when they are, a growing, overarching unease with how easy it is to employ AI to generate content and research may be at play. Concern for authorship and authenticity goes into overdrive, and some people catch strays.

More than one person is allowed to post "here's who's pitching today" or "here's who played yesterday" or "here's how this guy pitched".
