Eye contact during a conversation. I only recently started telling people close to me that they could either get full eye contact or full attention but not both. Because if I am looking into your eyes, chances are that I am not hearing more than 50% of what you are saying. But I have gone through my whole life learning how to respond exactly as if I have been paying attention because people get annoyed if you don't maintain eye contact. So I was just doing the eye contact, while having whole unrelated conversations with myself in my head but making sure to catch one or two key sentences before they finish speaking. (Sometimes the person finishes speaking before I make that switch and I am caught off guard and I have to say, could you say that last bit again?) But if you allow me look where I want to look, then I can more fully focus on what you are saying. If I maintain full eye contact, either I am not interested in the conversation at all or being polite (one exception of course is when I am trying to flirt, a thing I do very poorly). Few things are more exhausting to me during a conversation than maintaining eye contact.
