This sucks. America should welcome greatness. Builders, innovators, and creators should have a fast path to citizenship. I can’t fathom why we would make life harder for founders starting billion dollar companies that want to anchor themselves in the US.

TIL that the vast majority of reply guys don’t understand any of the following:
- basic vesting schedules
- how founders get equity
- how investors get equity

The “Cliff” usually refers to the point where you go from 0 equity to actual equity. Industry standard is 1 year. OAI follows that afaik.
From that point, you vest on a schedule. Every month or every 6 months. Never seen a continued vest schedule that is yearly, but it wouldn’t be a “cliff” either way.

Today, I’m closing my chapter at @OpenAI after three very meaningful years. I leave with deep gratitude for the opportunity to help scale the GTM organization. The timing feels right. I’m drawn back to the early stages of company building, and OpenAI is in a strong place—with GPT-5.5, Codex, and Denise Dresser's inspired leadership. Apparently a LOT of you are dumb so let me clarify:
Vesting cliff = time until you start vesting (usually 1 year)
Fully vested = time until you're done vesting (usually 4 years)
There isn't an alternative definition. If you use these terms differently, you're wrong :)
