A powerful opening to the #G20SocialSummit. Professor Narnia Bohler-Muller, G20 Engagement Groups Representative, challenged global leaders: “We are not just stakeholders. We are co-authors of the global agenda.” Our champions were there, shaping the narrative and pushing for global equity. #G20SocialSummit #AfricanAgency #G20SouthAfrica

An incredibly sobering and necessary report. Thank you, @SolomonADersso, for not sugarcoating the grimness of the situation. Africa’s peace and security have not been this imperiled in the 20+ years since the establishment of the @_AfricanUnion. The leaders meeting in Addis need to read every one of its 60 pages and move to reform the AU Peace and Security Council—otherwise, millions of lives will be lost. This is an area of championing that I hope President @WilliamsRuto, as the AU champion for reforms, takes on. The next chairperson of the AU Commission will face gargantuan challenges that will demand from him will, energy, diplomatic finesse, and plain old stubbornness! In brief, this is what I understood from the report: Africa is at a crossroads in its security governance. The combination of rising conflicts, governance crises, external interference, and regional fractures poses an existential challenge to the AU’s security architecture. The PSC’s effectiveness, credibility, and leadership are on the line. The report urges bold reforms to adapt to this new era: •Reinforcing the PSC’s decision-making power to act swiftly and decisively. •Strengthening African peacekeeping capabilities to reduce dependency on external actors (and along with this it is critical for the A3 in the UN Security Council to be better coordinated with the PSC.) •Building diplomatic cohesion among African states to prevent divisions that weaken collective security. •Balancing external partnerships without compromising African agency.

📢Breaking: Our signature annual publication that accompanies the submission by the #PSC of its Report on its Activities and the State of #Peace and #Security in Africa to the AU Assembly warns a new era of insecurity and instability is underway in #Africa with rise in the number & complexity of conflicts and emerging trends of threats of state collapse, the redrawing of maps of the continent & breakdown of regional orders. It reveals that these challenges & changes and loss of diplomatic leadership have brought the $AU to a crossroad. Dive deep into the details to find out why the AU needs to break from a business-as-usual approach and urgently change course. 👉 amaniafrica-et.org/africa-in-a-ne…

MY instant reaction: President William Ruto could have withdrawn the Finance Bill a few days ago and saved lives. But he was obstinate, and I watched police shoot protesters dead for no reason at all

Protests about Kenya’s #FinanceBill are engulfing Nairobi. Economic instability = Political instability. How many more situations like this do we need before we do something about it? #rejectfinancebill2024
