@Barwickipedia The Journal Sentinel probably framed it this way because that's what the WIAA led with. It was rather confusing.

@BlueCheese608 @DanRShafer Judging by the Assembly vote, I wouldn't be surprised if at least 2-3 Senate Dems wanted to vote for it, but leadership was whipping votes against. Just speculating, no inside info.

@DanRShafer It was a very shitty move by Evers. But in the end, they absolutely should have swallowed their pride & found 3 votes to pass it, while letting legislators and those running for governor diss it and propose a better fix.

I’m hearing a lot of frustration from Dem legislature sources about how the Evers administration handled this deal. One source said “his staff was woefully unprepared, misleading, and combative.”

"They believe that somehow putting money back into people's pockets that are struggling financially ... apparently they don't believe that's an issue." Gov. Tony Evers on the 15 Senate Dems who voted against tax relief deal in his first interview THE IVIEW SUN ON UPFRONT...

@ISFriendsHour Making Wisconsin's state tax the highest in the nation is not a way to generate job growth and company relocations, or to keep residents here. A 17% top bracket exceeds every single other state by a lot. It's silliness.

I wish every transit authority understood the importance of making clear and beautiful PDF maps available to the public. Interactive maps can be fun but can also be a pain. Bravo to @metrolosangeles for not just making the maps but making them easy to find.

@BlueCheese608 She's not totally wrong; due to rising costs, the state is already in a structural deficit despite the illusory "surplus." Of course that also means there is not really a surplus to "invest" in K-12 education either.

Ignore this attention seeker. In previous campaigns she a) implied she was gay, b) filmed a campaign ad while nursing her infant son on camera because #GoGirl, and c) attempted viral Tom Tiffany confrontation that was beyond cringe. She has zero juice for the 2026 race.
Matt Smith@mattsmith_news

Dem candidate for gov State Sen Kelda Roys rejects bipartisan tax deal between Dem Gov Evers and GOP: “Robin Vos has controlled Wisconsin like a puppeteer for a generation. In his final ‘screw you’ to working families, he’s trying to set the state’s projected surplus on fire…”

@BlueCheese608 @JuForthePeople Yeah, if Hong actually gets 40%+ in the primary like Evers did, then we'll happily admit we were wrong. What we don't want is Hong being stuck at 30% and two moderate candidates each getting 28%, where it's clear the overall desire was for a more moderate nominee.

@JuForthePeople I will walk on glass to vote for her as governor if she’s the candidate. But I don’t think she is the best person to keep the seat from falling to the GOP. Respect your passion and confidence.

Senator Bernie sanders is historically the most popular Senator nationally. Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is well-liked. Mayor Mamdani is gaining national acclaim for his politics. Rep. Hong is leading in our Governor’s race in Wisconsin. Seems extremely popular to me.
I, Robert@BlueCheese608

Yes, Wisconsin-style sewer socialism was: 1) politically popular. 2) led to successful societal outcomes, broadly middle class. DSA-style socialism is: 1) politically toxic (like moreso than MAGA). 2) littered with disastrous outcomes - especially in public safety & education.

@DeanAbbott I don't think that has anything to do with loneliness though. It's about people wanting something that is both healthy and also tastes good without having to cook from scratch themselves.

You know those "meals by mail" systems you can subscribe to where they send you something that "tastes homemade?" If those things aren't evidence that loneliness is a systemic problem for us, I don't know what is.

@alyssaleann This is also why it's more depressing to have same-gender roommates as a man than as a woman, hence why there is a bigger desire for single men to live alone. Like, I might be messy, but at least it's *my* mess and not someone else's.

@DeanAbbott @Applebees I’ve never been to Applebee’s in my life, why would I start going with a man? Chain restaurants are a sign of bad taste, there are plenty of affordable restaurants that serve interesting, quality food.

When people argue about whether a man should pay for dinner on the first date, I always come down on the "yes" side because I know @Applebees has a 2 for $25 special. Guys say they're afraid of being used for a free meal. Really, you think she's doing all this to exploit you for $12.50? And even if she is, so what? Is paying for that extra Clubhouse Grille going to break you? And if she thinks she's too good for Applebees, you have your answer.

@BlueCheese608 @DrewSav Everyone who is paying attention knew which party supported Taylor. But we're pretty atypical. This is why the WI GOP now wants to get on the "NC program" for Supreme Court judges and require party labels for Supreme Court judges. They think it would tank Dems in rural areas.

@heyellehogan I kind of disagree in the sense that a lot of in-person conversations are just "drafting a response in your head while pretending to listen." So many times I have had conversations where people respond to what they apparently expected me to say and not what I actually said.

Why I love a walk conversation: It has nowhere to go but forward. You can't scroll, check out, or draft a response in your head while pretending to listen. You're just there. Moving. Next to a person. And something about that… the motion, the absence of eye contact pressure, the fact that you're going somewhere together… loosens something. The conversation becomes a container. The trail becomes the container for the container. And something true gets said that probably wouldn't have happened across a table.

@aarmlovi The IRS already has free fillable forms that will both check for errors and will let you enter info to automatically deduct/deposit what you owe/your refund, and you can submit it online. It’s basically perfect I don’t understand why more people aren’t using it

Only question I had about the IRS free-file pilot was, why not just buy out FreeTaxUSA for pennies instead of building a brand new app that only worked on simple returns? It was already free federal, $15 for state (100% free if your state doesn't have income tax)
Alec Stapp@AlecStapp

This may sound like a sponsored post but I promise it's not (I just hate TurboTax and their rent-seeking lobbyists with the passion of a thousand suns): Use FreeTaxUSA instead. It's >90% cheaper than TurboTax and easier to use/higher quality software.

@muscleforlife if only most patients are willing to listen and follow doctor's advice about diet and exercise and not get defensive. 🙄🙄 lol. blaming doctors meanwhile it's mostly the patient who gets triggered, or just lazy and prefer a more instant route (like ozempic compared to diet)

@muscleforlife I think the real issue is that most people don't listen to their docs. Most are lazy and just want a pill. It feels like many doctors feel defeated and have accepted the fact that people won't make effort to fix themselves.

@magi_jay Ever since 2010 and particularly 2016, the Driftless region in my state has been voting for progressive or at least moderate candidates when there are no party labels, but votes solid R when there are party labels. Hope this finally changes but I'll believe it when I see it.

Yes. Nothing is certain, but these midterms are set up to be extraordinary. -There is a nationwide pattern of data--from AK to WI to GA--suggesting not just a blue electorate, but also significant voter persuasion. -GOP policy has always been unpopular. What new policies could they possibly advance to turn this around? -I doubt there's much culture-war-wise for them to mine either. That's the problem w/ over-playing that hand. Issues begin to lose salience, particularly in the presence of economic pain -Costs are gonna get worse and there are, unfortunately for all of us, there are recession indicators. Midterms may plausibly be more akin to 2008 Obama than 2018 Democratic House sweep. Not exactly the "same," because the comparison is a bit apples/oranges & the Senate is tricky, but there could plausibly be a similar shock effect as in "How in the world did we win THAT seat?" 2018 was more targeted to specific realignments. I don't recall 2006 well enough; perhaps that's a better comparison. Let me know. I think of 2008 b/c that's the year when the bottom fell out. What we're seeing now looks like the bottom falling out. Here's one hint about all this: The Driftless region in Wisconsin was 7 points MORE BLUE for the WI Supreme Court race than Obama 2008. Democrats have to stay the course they're on: concrete issues on the state/local level + affordability. Anti-Trump where applicable/wise. Take hints from Shawn Harris in GA, Mary Peltola in AK, Robert Sand in Iowa, & many others. All these folks are campaigning as THEMSELVES to communities they understand. Ignore online chatter and the podcasters. We shouldn't rest on our laurels, but it's looking to be a historic year. And I think LESS interfering on the national level--whether its from the consultant class or the twitter commentariat--HELPS Democrats.

@MichaelMaiello @TheStalwart @AlecMacGillis To the extent this would even happen (it wouldn't, just look at the diversity on large campuses) it's a good thing. The whole problem with culture now is how much more fragmented it is. Sports are basically the only area where we still have these shared cultural moments.

This kind of development is really depressing to me. All kinds of weird little colleges in the Northeast are closing. Nobody wants to double major in literature and kombucha-making anymore. Everyone just wants to work for Jane Street or an AI lab.

@AdrienneRoyer Maybe it's the only policy community that does this, but I have noticed a lot of men in the fitness industry like to do this as well. So much male fitness content is only targeted towards men who are already fit and further alienating those who aren't.
