WORLDWIDE CRACKDOWN ON VPNs BEGINS
🇪🇺 EU Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen is pushing limits on VPN use, warning new age and ID systems must not be bypassed.
Utah becomes the first 🇺🇸 US state to target VPNs under age verification laws starting May 6, 2026.
Websites can be held liable even if users mask location, forcing a choice: block VPNs entirely or require ID checks from everyone.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation calls it a “liability trap” that could push global platforms toward mass identity verification.
Momentum is building globally. 🇬🇧 UK and 🇫🇷 French officials are now signaling VPN restrictions may be next.

En nu overal ter wereld op hetzelfde moment staan VPNs ter discussie. Net als overal ter wereld op precies hetzelfde moment snel leeftijdsverificatie moet worden ingevoerd. Want de kinderen lopen nu meteen gevaar. Dit kan geen dag meer wachten na 22 jaar social media.

‼️🇺🇸 Utah is about to become the first US state to legally target VPN use as part of online age verification. The law goes into effect Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
🔴 If you are physically located in Utah, you count as a Utah user, regardless of whether you use a VPN, proxy, or any other tool to disguise your location. Websites are now legally responsible for age-verifying you anyway.
🔴 Sites that handle "material harmful to minors" are banned from sharing instructions on how to use a VPN, or from offering any means to bypass geofencing.
The EFF calls this a "liability trap." Websites cannot reliably tell where a VPN user actually is, so the safest legal move is either to block every known VPN IP outright, or to force ID-based age verification on every visitor worldwide. Either path subjects millions of users to invasive identity checks, regardless of where they actually live.
The Cato Institute put it bluntly. When a policy can be defeated by a privacy tool millions of people legitimately use, the policy is the problem.
The collateral damage is, as always, the people who actually need VPNs:
🔴 Journalists protecting sources
🔴 Domestic abuse survivors hiding from stalkers
🔴 Activists in hostile environments
🔴 Remote workers tunneling into corporate networks
🔴 Travelers banking from abroad
🔴 Anyone who simply does not want their ISP, employer, or data brokers reading their traffic
This is not staying in Utah. The UK's Children's Commissioner has called VPNs a "loophole that needs closing." France's Minister Delegate for AI and Digital Affairs has named VPNs as "the next topic on my list."
The EU is rolling out age verification across all 27 member states by end of 2026, with EVP Henna Virkkunen openly admitting they have no plan for VPN bypass yet.
Utah is leading by example.

Op de vraag hoe men voorkomt dat dit eenvoudig omzeild wordt via een VPN buiten de EU, antwoordde vicevoorzitter Henna Virkkunen dat dit “een belangrijk onderdeel is van de volgende stappen”. 🧐🧐🧐
Tot zover het artikel.
Maar nu ook de hoogste tijd om te stoppen met doen alsof dit over “de veiligheid van onze kinderen” gaat en om te stoppen met naïef te pikken wat de EU ons ongevraagd door de strot wil duwen.
Want dit gaat niet over “bescherming van onze kinderen”, dit is pure identiteitscontrole van iedere EU Burger die online wil gaan.
Punt.
Een digitale leiband, verpakt in “morele verontwaardiging”.
Bottom line is dat niemand nog toegang zal krijgen tot het internet of sociale media zonder zich eerst te identificeren.
Dat wordt geen ‘keuze’ maar een verplichting.
“Voor onze kinderen…”. Niet dus.
Dezelfde logica die ook wil dat alle privéberichten -dus uw en mijn WhatsApp- systematisch worden gescand, “voor uw eigen goed”…
Ook niet dus.
DIe draconische maatregelen komen
van dezelfde Europese Commissie waarvan de voorzitster al jaren alles in het werk stelt om haar eigen communicatie rond miljardencontracten aan bevriende partijen halsstarrig verborgen te houden. Dat ging nochtans over de aanbesteding van belastinggeld.
Transparantie wordt op z’n kop gezet.
Zum kotsen.
Die identificatie valt voorlopig nog te omzeilen, oa omdat het systeem -dat al wereldbedragen heeft gekost tot hiertoe- nog zo lek is als een zeef. Maar het zal daar niet stoppen. Dat lees je nu al in het antwoord van Virkkunen.
Als we dit soort massasurveillance -want dat is het of wordt het- blijven slikken, dan gaat dit niet stoppen bij leeftijdsverificatie.
En dan, binnen twintig jaar, gaan onze kinderen -waar we het zogezegd voor moeten doen- ons aankijken en vragen:
“Hoe hebben jullie dit in die jaren 2020-2026 toch allemaal laten gebeuren?”
Wat gaan we dan antwoorden?
Dat het voor hun veiligheid was?
