I can't speak about the black Berets, but if I may provide a slight edit here, US Special Operation Forces still wear BDUs on occasion. Special Forces and MARSOC are probably the ones who wear it the most. Both spend a lot of time doing Foreign Internal Defense (FID) or training foreign troops in poor nations who still wear Woodland M81 style uniforms. It allows them to blend in. I've also heard a few years back that Marine Force Recon still wore Woodland M81 style uniforms. I don't know if they still do, but if I had to bet money I would bet that they do occasionally wear BDUs, if they're on a Woodland operation. Special Operations Forces are given more leeway on this issue. If a Delta unit were preparing for a mission and they said, "That terrain is perfectly suited for BDUs..." there's not a person in JSOC would have the audacity to tell them they can't wear BDUs and must wear the pretty Multicam. If SOF can safely increase their odds of mission success, they're going to do it. Hence, the long hair and beards throughout GWOT. Finally, Erick Miyares is a retired Operator from the ISA/Task Force Orange. On his appearance on The Team House podcast he told a great story about something he had to do while running a solo mission. He had to do something where there were already many regular US forces fighting and in order to not stand out to enemy or even US Forces, he wore a real Marine Corps uniform to infiltrate - he blended himself in with Marines who were going to that area he was interested in. So, it worked out perfect. When he was done with his Classified mission he switched into a US Army uniform and exfiltrated among the Army troops who were leaving the area. That's some cool shit! I may have had it backwards. Maybe it was Army in, Marines out. I can't remember. So, you are totally correct in saying that no no SOF units in the American military wear BDUs as a primary uniform. I thought maybe you'd find the other stuff interesting.
