The Zynq was the first real architectural change. Before that FPGA has processors like the power PC 405.
However, to use the power pc you had to configure the FPGA etc. It was very painful to use, but good for its time and worked.
The Zynq changed that as it made the processor the master of the system. it booted just like a ARM processor and had a lot of peripherals. In effect in the Zynq, Zynq MPSoC and Versal etc the programmable logic is just a addressed mapped peripheral. Of course it is more complex than that in reality.
But it showed a step change, I think it is heterogeneous system on chip. It has programmable logic, but it also has way more as well.
I love the Zynq it honestly changed my life.
