There was this time when we saw a paper about making skin transparent in mice, and tried to get it to work on ourselves We made the gel from the paper and were rubbing it in for half an hour, but unfortunately, to this day, our skin remains embarrassingly opaque

A team of 5 people just saw inside a living human brain. No surgery. No MRI room the size of a truck. Just ultrasound waves and tiny gas bubbles in the bloodstream. Most people will scroll past this thinking it's another AI hype announcement. Here's what's actually happening beneath the headline. The technique is called Ultrasound Localization Microscopy. It's been in peer-reviewed science since 2021. Nature Biomedical Engineering published the foundational transcranial work achieving 25 micrometer resolution in humans. What Aleph Neuro just did: they ran it on Butterfly Network's Ultrasound-on-Chip, a semiconductor chip that shrinks the hardware from a room to your hand. The physics is real: - Inject FDA-approved microbubbles into blood - Fire ultrafast ultrasound pulses through the skull at several kilohertz - Each bubble reflects sound back uniquely - Track thousands of bubbles per second - Over 4 minutes, a full 3D vascular map builds itself, 10-15x sharper than standard ultrasound, beating the diffraction limit entirely This is not "MRI killer" hype. MRI reads chemistry. This reads blood flow geometry at microscopic scale. But here's the thing nobody is saying clearly: Blood flow IS brain activity. When neurons fire, vessels dilate within milliseconds. This is neurovascular coupling, the same signal fMRI has used for decades to decode thought patterns. MindEye (2023) reconstructed seen images directly from fMRI data. NeuroClips (2024) decoded video from brain signals. The imaging is now portable. The decoding science already works. Aleph open-sourced the code and dataset. They scanned one of their own team members. His first IV ever. The gap between "we can see your brain's blood vessels" and "we can read what you're thinking" is still enormous. But it just got a lot smaller.

Very excited to see the launch of @alephneuro! They've released their first milestone: the most detailed vascular image of a human brain. They are working on some truly groundbreaking research in hopes of achieving noninvasive BCI! They are betting on ultrasound imaging! Like I have been saying, ultrasound is highly underrated :) @humanscotti and I have known the Aleph team for quite some time and got to visit their lab last year, it's been great to see their progress!! And glad our MindEye research inspired them to work on this :)
