A red flag (fire weather) warning has been issued for the entire western and central portions of the Upper Peninsula excluding northern Houghton and all of Keweenaw county until 9 pm EDT 5/16/26. Hazard: Conditions favorable for the development of large wildfires caused by outdoor burning or other forms of fire ignition Reasoning: Wind gusts over 35 mph possible, along with relative humidity levels dropping below 25% in spots

Wake up, it's going to be a great spring Saturday across the state. Temperatures ranging from the mid-60s in the Upper Peninsula to 70s and around 80°F for parts of the Lower Peninsula, and southern Upper Peninsula. A few locations may exceed projections dependent on how quickly morning clouds and storms can clear. Speaking of which, if you live along and south of I-96 this morning, showers and storms continue. Redevelopment is also possible later this afternoon across the same area, but most storms will be below severe limits. Abundant sunshine will be likely the further north you go. Wind gusts of 20-30 mph are possible today, with isolated gusts of 35-40 mph possible north of US-10 in the Lower Peninsula, and west of Escanaba in the Upper Peninsula. Fire weather is likely here today, and we will have zones we are monitoring for fire weather posted later this morning. Red flag warnings, and fire weather watches are in effect in these areas. 6:25am ET - We are tracking a rather loud start to your Saturday, with several storms popping up across southern lower Michigan. Not everyone will see a storm, but for the lucky ones who do, expect small hail, frequent lightning, and gusty winds. Severe weather is not anticipated, but we've already seen a couple warnings this morning so we are on standby just in case. Primary areas for storms include along and south of the I-69 corridor down to the Ohio border, back west to US-127 from Lansing to Hillsdale.

One year ago, a tornado outbreak struck Michigan with around a dozen tornadoes in total. 90-100 MPH straight line winds struck a neighborhood not to far from me. First time I ever had to take shelter in my basement. Also the first severe weather event I've surveyed in-person.

“The UN’s downgrading of some of the most extreme climate scenarios” This gets it wrong and backwards: Van Vuuren’s team of climate modellers is not formally associated with the UN or IPCC. The IPCC *will* presumably use the team’s updated models (or some variation) in their next major assessment. “The UN-backed scientific community is now acknowledging…” 👉Why invoke the UN again? Anyway, the scientific community has acknowledged this for years. It’s not really new. That’s why the modelling team removed the scenario. “Canadians deserve to know this”. 👉Indeed. They also deserve to know that the world (and Canada) could warm by a similar amount as the removed scenario. And that the world is very unlikely to meet its international commitments to keeping global warming below 2C.
