The “compliance is not engagement” trope is so tired. It was the theory of everything back in the 2010’s and earlier. It’s not profound, and at its worst it encourages teachers to eschew strategies that insist that 100% of students attend, think, and share their ideas.

This year my Ss spelling has improved leaps and bounds. Next year I want to do a little study to measure spelling improvement. I'm looking for standardized spelling tests. I'm leading towards the Test of Written Spelling - 5th Edition. Other suggestions?

@didier_paul @sage_stage Ooh this is interesting. I don't disagree but definitely mix them all up... have lately had an unmotivated class clown (who is lovely btw) at the front by me, but I've noticed a shift in class dynamics that isn't optimal. I'm moving them to the back to experiment now!

This is the reason I’ve been creating seating charts with the motivated kids front and center. The old, put the unmotivated interrupters close to the teacher stifles learning and participation. I’ve seen my learners feel more encouraged and positive. I refuse to focus too much attention wear it has little impact.

- Use Google Classroom more; find places where it would be helpful to me
- Have ChatGPT adjust reading level of course materials in order to better differentiate
- Think about how to decorate my room more because the walls are pretty bare

@educator4ever36 Report card comments on student skills and behavior are meaningless now as well. I'm not allowed to say a student has any real challenges with anything, just that they "continue to work towards..." How is a parent even supposed to know what that really means?

Parents- I cannot stress this enough. Grades are meaningless in public schools. Make your child sit down with you and privately can read, make them show you math computation, ask them questions about what they know in science and social studies.

Many parents don't even know their kids are behind. Grade inflation and lowered standards make kids look like they're doing just fine. And of course, parents trust their kids' grades and teachers - why shouldn't they? When really, their kid is way below grade level without a single warning sign.

Ever put a middle schooler in their place by using a quick slam or straight up roast!? Wow, you’re so smart and in charge. All this does, however, is encourage students to use humiliation through quick-witted & rude banter in future interactions in your classroom.
