@badtothebone124 Intriguing!. I haven’t read the BoM in years but those are interesting points you made.

@amazz180 Sure thing. Autocephalous nature of the Church with the formation of a church in the Americas far from where the Apostles could have reached in their lifetimes. Alma reciting the Jesus Prayer. Keeping of sacred texts and relics by the prophets and high priesthood...

@amazz180 @barrelagedfaith I believe, just like Joseph Smith had a questionv and prepared himself for revelation, the whole of the America's churches were moved upon by the spirit and asking important questions.

1 Nephi ch. 11 reads more like a ChatGPT summary of the Gospel account of what already happened than an authentic prophecy of what will happen. I don't know how else to put it.
Hugh Hark@HarkHugh

@barrelagedfaith @PaoloGerrini So God is unable to have prophets write down prophecies and then save them to help people centuries later? Or are you declaring God would never do that? How do you know that? (You don't.)

@ibnDeseretii @barrelagedfaith Yes I’m aware. I’ve read the BoM many times. Imo it seems much more plausible to be a 19th century product than ancient

@amazz180 @barrelagedfaith the pitch of the Book of Mormon was never "read and you'll know it's true because it seems legit" or "you'll know because of secular history" The promise is that God will reveal himself unto you, he will tell you himself.

@Dmtaylor125 @barrelagedfaith It’s apples to oranges. No one doubts the Bible is a legit ancient text, same cannot be same about BoM.

@amazz180 @barrelagedfaith That's not quite our point. You're free to find the BoM dubious, but at least be *consistent* in your assessment. If you discount the miraculous nature of the BoM, you'd better have good reasons that don't also apply to the Bible, or else you should reject the Bible as well.

Ironically, it was the authenticity of the Gospels that brought C.S. Lewis out of Atheism into Christianity. (And the lack of authenticity for the the Book of Mormon that kept him Nicene). So no, this isn't an atheist strategy or method when we discuss the 18th century literary origins of the Book of Mormon although I've received this comment from Mormons about 50 times today.

@barrelagedfaith Once again, all our critics become atheists the second they need to attack us.

The version of Christianity that asks nothing, costs nothing, and changes nothing is doing a lot of damage.

@Alex_Ortodoxie I think they get theology wrong and maybe the founder did demonic things but hard to say the system as a whole is demonic when the fruits of the people is so fundamentally Christian.

Mormonism is demonic
Thoughtful-Faith@ThoughtfulSaint

Hey @PastorMark you continually call Mormonism demonic. So I would like see if you are willing to stand by those claims publicly. I would like to offer a public debate on the following question. Is Mormonism Demonic? Also You talk regularly about masculine Christianity … well, a real man is willing to stand by his public claims and defend them. Are you?

@stackerco As Orthodox, salvation isn’t simple a legal declaration of being “guilt free”. It’s theosis, growing in further union and communion with God. Faith and good works are all part of this process.

How are you saved? Pick one. Historically, tens of millions of people have died fighting over which one is right: 1. Faith apart from works, and believe in Jesus
Romans 3:28; Ephesians 2:8-9, John 3:16 2. Justified by works and not by faith alone
James 2:24 3. Keep the commandments, sell everything, give to the poor, and follow me
Mark 10:17-21 (Rick man) 4. Perform acts of compassion only (feed hungry, clothe naked, visit sick & imprisoned)
Matthew 25:31-46 (sheep and goats) 5. Repent and be baptized
Acts 2:38 (Peter at Pentecost)

I didn’t get to see my friend @ThoughtfulSaint debate Dr. James White….but I will say victors don’t block their opponents and then give long rambling explanations to which they can’t respond. But as Dr. White was foreordained to tweet what he did….what can you do?

Members and believers of any denomination. If you were behind in tithing 💵 to your church, and you were broke with only a car, would you sell that car to have enough money to make the back payments?

@olseaj @stackerco When I was LDS I heard a few instances of this but don’t recall it being the norm. Might be up to bishops discretion.

@stackerco @amazz180 He specifically said in his talk that that was a personal decision. The church doesn’t teach back payments of tithing.

@stackerco Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant in my experience in the Orthodox Church no such concept exists. We all should be contributing to our local parish, whether financially or donating time or both, but no one asks you what %.
