I'm not particularly against Canadian immigration to the US (I have Canadian and US citizenship myself) but the argument made here is the polar opposite of the truth. "High skill immigration" is how you get Chinese spies stealing stuff from Google and fleeing back to the mainland for the Chinese Communist party.

I care much more about the casting of extras though, I hope he doesn't go to rings of power with this one. You can at least (kind of) rationalize the casting of Greek gods as not looking Greek, but diverse background extras would be almost impossible to rationalize...

The Amazon Rings of Power series is a good example of a terrible dei implementation similar to what Thompson suggests here. Every individual shot in the series seems to have a diversity quota and it makes the world building of the series laughable.
A casting more diverse than the Jackson films could have worked but only if they took care to fold it into the world building...

I hesitate to critique the casting before a movie is even out bc maybe Nolan can make it work in a way that doesn't bring you out of the fantasy.
I'm not saying it is impossible, but that you shouldn't cast with a dei target in mine like Thompson is suggesting. your casting should aim to best sell the story/world of your movie...
