The pipeline to Ceyhan in Turkey offers direct Mediterranean access and a nameplate capacity of approximately 1.6 million bpd, the most immediately scalable western alternative available without new greenfield infrastructure.

My latest brief piece on Iraq’s oil trading strategy. The current disruption should be treated as an opportunity for the incoming government to reset the model — strengthening resilience and addressing long-standing structural gaps. upstreamonline.com/opinion/iraqs-…

The Coordination Framework of Shia parties is set to nominate Ali a-Zaidi as its candidate for prime minister. a-Zaidi runs the Southern Islamic Bank, which was banned by the US from accessing dollars due to partaking in $ smuggling into Iran, to prop up the faltering Iranian currency. On top of this, Iraqi sources tell me a-Zaidi is an incredibly corrupt businessperson who is close to the Iranian-backed militias. Clearly, a nomination that is a sign of defiance to the US.

Zaidi is associated with the Al-Janoob Islamic Bank — which is sanctioned by the US Treasury. He has flourished economically under the Sudani administration, expanding his business empire. Designating him (if true) will surely upset Trump—and “you [CF] don’t mess with the Zohan.”

I feel ashamed of the lack of awareness among people who take pride in their Kurdish culture, yet are still capable of such profound ignorance and disregard for the environment of their Kurdish homeland. The only real solution is the enforcement of strict environmental regulations by the @Kurdistan backed by punitive measures to effectively mitigate this. This can be stopped within a week. Impose penalty fees for 1M IQD per plastic bottle, per plastic bag and 5M IQD per kg of garbage. 20M IQD for chopping off trees. Hire park rangers, use drones with AI to track cars that break the rules, inform the near checkpoint, stop them, let them pay and if they don't pay, give them 1 month of cleaning the mountain area or collect x10 of what waste they threw out. Done.

We drove up to the so-called “Forward Defense Line,” a de-facto new security border Israel has imposed in southern Lebanon. From the last checkpoint of the Lebanese army, we could hear explosions as the IDF demolished homes south of that line, despite a ceasefire. This is first and foremost a failure of Iraqi leadership and exposes the limits of thinking rhetorical acrobatics are going to relieve you of your duty to rein in rogue militias on your payroll. It is going to have adverse ripple effects across the Iraqi financial system, economy, and governance. The political leadership in Iraq is silent about it and does not want to confirm it because the implications could be disastrous. Iraq has had serious liquidity issues and a budget deficit of around one third of its planned budget. It has not been able to sell much oil for the past two months, in a country where more than 90 percent of state revenues come from oil. Now, with dollar shipments to Iraq from the US stopped, this will have a serious impact on the economy. This is the worst nightmare of the political class, particularly the Shia. The second- and third-order effects could include an economic nosedive and widespread public discontent and protests. This would be a terrible outcome for a fragile government and order in the midst of regional turmoil—a government that has lost the goodwill of many of its neighbors and large parts of its population as a result of the behavior of Iran-controlled militias.

Iraq exports fuel via Syria’s Baniyas port on Mediterranean coast Convoys carrying Iraqi fuel began entering Syrian territory on Wednesday through the Al-Tanf border crossing, heading to the Baniyas oil port for export to global markets, highlighting Syria’s role as a regional transit hub. The Syrian Petroleum Company said shipments would be unloaded into storage facilities before being transferred to the Baniyas terminal for loading onto tankers designated for export. sana.sy/en/investment/…
