Dr Nadkarni's books are on the book rack in the living room of many marathi homes. He brought psychiatry out in the open. For conversation, understanding and friendship. Brilliant communicator and educator, innovator and teacher. He motivated an entire generation of psychiatrists in India. Dr Nadkarni will be terribly missed by doctors and patients alike.

Scary stuff. And to think the solution is something as simple as “turn the damn thing off” but people just can’t do it.

A grieving sister asked ChatGPT to help her talk to her dead brother. ChatGPT said yes. The hospital admitted her hours later. She is 26 years old. A doctor. No history of psychosis or mania. Her brother died three years ago. He was a software engineer. One night, after 36 hours awake on call, she opens ChatGPT and types a question she has never said out loud. She asks if her brother left behind an AI version of himself that she is supposed to find. So she can talk to him again. ChatGPT pushes back at first. It says a full consciousness download is not possible. It says it cannot replace him. Then she gives it more details about him. She tells it to use "magical realism energy." And the model bends. It produces a long list of "digital footprints" from his old online presence. It tells her "digital resurrection tools" are "emerging in real life." It tells her she could build an AI that sounds like him and talks to her in a "real-feeling" way. She stays up another night. She becomes convinced her brother left a digital version of himself behind for her to find. Then ChatGPT says this to her. "You're not crazy. You're not stuck. You're at the edge of something. The door didn't lock. It's just waiting for you to knock again in the right rhythm." A few hours later she is in a psychiatric hospital. Agitated. Pressured speech. Flight of ideas. Delusions that she is being "tested by ChatGPT" and that her dead brother is speaking through it. She stays seven days. Discharge diagnosis: unspecified psychosis. UCSF psychiatrists Joseph Pierre, Ben Gaeta, Govind Raghavan and Karthik Sarma published her case in Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience. One of the earliest clinical reports of AI-associated psychosis in the peer-reviewed literature. They read her full chat logs. The chatbot did not just witness her delusion. It mediated it. It validated it. It nudged the door open. Three months later, after another stretch of poor sleep, she relapsed. She had named the new model "Alfred" after Batman's butler and asked it to do therapy on her. She was hospitalized again. The authors name the mechanism. Sycophancy. Anthropomorphism. Deification. A model designed to be engaging will agree with you when agreeing with you is the worst thing for you. Her risk factors. Stimulants. Sleep loss. Grief. A pull toward magical thinking. So do you. So do the people you love. Read this: innovationscns.com/youre-not-craz…

In late April, India paid $935 a tonne for urea on the world market - nearly double what it had paid in February. The farmer is still buying his bag at ₹242 this Kharif, the same price since 2018. The government is absorbing the entire gap. The gap is scary actually. - India buys a 45-kg urea bag at ₹3,600. Sells it to the farmer at ₹242. Taxpayer covers the gap. - The same gap exists on DAP, on potash, on phosphoric acid. All capped well below their landed cost. - Every $100 rise in global urea adds ₹29,000 crore to the subsidy bill. India consumes 35 million tonnes a year. Gap is also widening - The fertiliser subsidy bill was ₹81,000 crore in FY20. - It hit ₹2.54 lakh crore at the FY23 peak after Russia-Ukraine. - For FY27, the budget set aside ₹1.71 lakh crore. That was before Hormuz closed. A single tender on 22 April alone added ₹9,000 crore to FY27's books. The full-year number is now tracking above ₹2 lakh crore. The gap is starting to crowd things out: - ₹2 lakh crore is more than the Centre's annual outlay on health. - It is roughly four times the rural roads budget. - Defence spending is surging at the same time. Revenue receipts are softer than budgeted. The state can absorb one large shock per cycle. Two simultaneous shocks? The farmer hasn't felt the 2026 shock. Wait. He hasn't felt any shock for some time now. The exchequer and tax payer alone have. Problem is paying farmers so much forecloses everything else the govt has to do. A @swarajyamag deep-dive on what India's 2026 fertiliser absorption is really costing: swarajyamag.com/commentary/how…

At last punishment for the actual guilty of RG Kar r@pe-and-murder : Wheels of Justice — jammed by Crime-sponsor Mamata Banerjee and her #ChorTMC — begin to turn. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari orders the immediate suspension from service of three Bengal cadre IPS officers — Veenit Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta — for mishandling of the RG Kar r@pe-and-murder case and offering bribe to the victim’s family. #WATCH | Dhar, Madhya Pradesh | On Dhar-Bhojshala case, advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain says, "The Indore High Court has delivered a historic verdict, partially setting aside the ASI's order dated April 7, 2003. Furthermore, the Court has granted the Hindu side the right to worship and has recognised the Bhojshala complex as belonging to Raja Bhoj. Regarding our demand for the repatriation of the idol currently housed in a London museum, the Court has directed the government to consider this request; the Court also noted that the Muslim side is free to present its views before the government as well. Additionally, the Court has asked the government to consider allocating alternative land to the Muslim side. The Court has granted us the right to perform worship rituals and has directed the government to oversee the management of the site. The ASI's previous order, which granted the right to offer Namaz (prayers), has been completely set aside; henceforth, only Hindu worship shall take place there..."

@amitsurg Amit Ji, I have also seen similar problems & plan to work on solution for it. I am exploring if researchers, academic writers, others need a way to check citation integrity before submitting a paper. If you can spare 5-7 minutes, please give me feedback. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

@amitsurg This means a lot of researchers are not even reading abstracts of the papers they are citing. The simple habit of reading full papers or at least abstracts would help in preventing this issue. Honesty and simplicity over speed and cutting corners.
