Across Africa, there are only 11.2 health workers per 10,000 people; far below the 44.5 recommended by the World Health Organization. This shortage affects access, quality of life, and lives. Strengthening the workforce is key to resilient systems and Universal Health Coverage. Act now. Read the AHC report to find recommended practical solutions: amref.org/download/ahc-n… #Amref4PHC #HWWeek2026 #UHC #HealthForAll @MastercardFdn @WHO @AmrefUniversity

Africa bears 24% of the global disease burden but has just 3% of the health workforce. This imbalance limits access to essential health services and threatens progress toward Universal Health Coverage (#UHC). Closing this gap needs sustained investment in health workers, systems, and solutions that reach communities. Every day, Simenti cycles for kilometres across rural Malawi, not because it’s easy, but because lives depend on it. He doesn’t just deliver care. He delivers access, trust, and hope. Across remote communities, Simenti ensures that no one is left behind. But his story raises an important question: How many more health workers like him are doing extraordinary work without the support they deserve? This #WHWWeek, as we celebrate heroes like Simenti, we must also act. We call for greater investment in health workers, in their training, protection, and fair working conditions. Because when we invest in #health workers, we invest in stronger, more resilient communities. #WHWWeek2026 #HealthWorkersAreVIPs #Amref4PHC @JNJNews @gatesfoundation @WHO @WBReastafrica @VillageReach @pfizer @daktari1 @williengumi @DestaLakew @MastercardFdn @UNITAID @amref_malawi

Did you know? Training communities to manage & repair boreholes is key to sustainable #water access. With support from the Made Blue Foundation, @amref_malawi has trained 5 Water Point Committees to repair boreholes & promote #hygiene. Stronger systems. Healthier communities.

𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚? That was the question at the heart of today’s Real Talk LIVE session at #IMNHC2026, co-hosted by Amref’s Catalysing Voices and @alignmnh platforms. As global health financing shifts and systems move toward integration and country-led priorities, it is clear that the future of maternal and newborn health is not guaranteed. It must be deliberately protected and prioritised. Here are a few highlights: 💬 “It’s not about how much money is available, but what we’re buying with it, and whether results follow.” Dr Caleb Mike Mulongo challenged us to rethink the funding debate, placing accountability and outcomes at the center. 📊 “Without data, we are dead.” Prof Anne-Beatrice Kihara reminded us of the urgency: a woman dies every two minutes, a newborn every 16 seconds. She stressed that political will, gender-responsive policies, and real-time data must be prioritised to drive interventions aimed at saving the lives of mothers and newborns. 📉 Boniface Mbuthia pushed us further: are we telling the full story? Too often, success is amplified while harder truths, like pre-natal deaths, remain hidden. True accountability demands honesty in data. ❓ And from the audience, we noted this powerful question: “Should you be healthy before going to school, or go to school healthy?” A simple but profound reminder that health is foundational, not optional, to development. What we are taking forward: ✔ Accountability must go beyond elections, and citizens must actively hold governments to account, ✔ The patient must be at the center of reforms, not the system, not the funding. The reform agenda is real, and at Amref Health Africa, we believe the answer lies in strong primary health care systems, community ownership, and relentless accountability. We believe when systems work for women, they work for everyone. #AmrefAtIMNHC2026 #MaternalHealth

Malawi has launched a 4-day nationwide #Polio vaccination campaign (24–27 March), targeting children aged 0–10. Has your child been vaccinated yet? Every child vaccinated brings us closer to a #PolioFreeMalawi. @amref_malawi is supporting this effort alongside MoH, UNICEF & WHO.

A defining moment for maternal health in #Africa! Today, at #IMNHC2026, we officially launched the SUPREME initiative, a bold new partnership to tackle two of the leading causes of maternal deaths: pre-eclampsia and maternal anemia. Every year, tens of thousands of women die from these conditions, even though we already have the tools to prevent and treat them. The challenge is not innovation, but access. Supported by @UNITAID and co-implemented with @CHAI_health, SUPREME brings together a powerful consortium, including @Jhpiego, @NGOSolthis, @MarktAccessAfri, @WACIHealth, @Auruminstitute, and @ConceptFNDN, to change this reality across Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, and Tanzania. What makes SUPREME different is its end-to-end approach, addressing the full product access pathway, from innovation and market shaping to service delivery and community uptake. Through its dual model, 🔹 SUPREME SECURE – strengthening supply, markets, and product availability 🔹 SUPREME LIFELINES – ensuring the right care reaches women at the point of need, the initiative bridges the gap between #innovation and real impact among underserved communities. At Amref Health Africa, we are proud to lead the LIFELINES component, working with governments, health workers, and communities to embed these solutions into strong, responsive antenatal care systems. Because saving lives is not just about having the right tools. It’s about ensuring they are accessible, trusted, and delivered at scale. By 2029, this initiative aims to create the conditions needed to drive lasting reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality. 👇Explore Amref’s full participation at IMNHC 2026, and learn more about the programme: 🔗newsroom.amref.org/advancing-mate… #SUPREME #MaternalHealth

🌍 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚. From rising heat and floods to shifting disease patterns and food insecurity, #climatechange is already reshaping health risks for millions across the continent. Yet Africa still lacks enough locally generated evidence to guide climate and health policies. Today at the 2nd #PHCCongress in Nairobi, @Amref_Worldwide and partners launched the Pan-African Centre for Research and Policy on #Climate Change and #Health, hosted at @AmrefUniversity. The Centre will generate the research, policy insights, and partnerships needed to confront climate-driven health threats across #Africa, ensuring solutions are grounded in African realities. As speakers highlighted during the launch, tackling the #ClimateCrisis will require stronger research, regional collaboration, and resilient primary health care systems. Because protecting Africa’s future means protecting the health of its people. The Centre, funded by @IDRC_CRDI and @FCDOGovUK, is a collaborative effort of Amref Health Africa, Amref International University, the @UBBotswana, @KPMG, Africa International University, @PACJA1, and the @RockefellerFdn. #PHCCongress2026 #ClimateHealth #PrimaryHealthCare @WHOAFRO @AfricaCDC @Agness_A @AGNESAfrica1 @KEMRI_Wellcome

Primary Health Care must shift from a provider-centric model to a people-powered system. As Dr. @daktari1 Githinji Gitahi, Group CEO, Amref Health Africa, reminds us, communities are not passive beneficiaries of health systems; they are co-creators of healthier societies.
