I am now planning my first solo (and biggest) road trip. Balkans area roughly 🌍 I would like to stop by in: - Romania (never been) - Bulgaria - Greece - Albania - Montenegro (never been) - Bosna (never been) It's great that Ro + Bu is now fully in Schengen 🇪🇺 I can drive without borders all the way to Greece. But maybe I only make it to Romania.😅 Open-ended road. It would be my first solo road trip. Might be a bad idea. But life is one and if I can drive so much, it's now. I'll work on LakyAI and hopefully meet some people. Should I make some vlogs? (Still need to do 8 vlogs for my challenge!) I'll release my course and then go. 🤞

2006 - 2025. Mylo ♥️, champ of champs, has left the building, 2 months shy of his 19th birthday. My god, what a run! I had him for almost half my life, and can't imagine him not in it. 💔 Hug your pets extra hard for me tonight.

@dhh Spotlight, Time Machine and other things Apple added come at a price. Also, macOS is derived from Mach and BSD which weren’t faster than Linux.

Got curious how much faster Linux is than macOS for small-file access and creation. The results are shocking: curl -L cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern… -o linux.tar.xz time tar -xf linux.tar.xz Framework Desktop: 1.6s MBP M4 Pro: 12.2s Over 7x faster on these 90K files!! 🤯

@ryancarson It is clicking on many that have stayed too long on macOS. The original promise of BSD Unix for the masses has been broken for awhile now.

Omarchy is the first OS since Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah (released 24 years ago!) that feels delightful to use as a dev with taste. I’m seriously considering leaving Mac OS. You can do *everything* on the keyboard *and* the UX and DX is delightful. Need a terminal? Cmd+Enter Need @Neovim? Cmd+n Want it all instantly, beautifully tiled? Happens automatically. Need a browser? Cmd+b Want to check btop? Cmd+t I could go on for like 20 minutes. Apparently Omarchy 2.0 is coming out soon …

@mgonto @dhh DHH has amazing intuiton and taste. He seized an opportunity and applied the Rails convention over configuration recipe again. The Mac promise of a Unix for the masses has been broken for a while. I recently got my first non-Apple computer in 20 years.

I'm blown away at how @dhh was able to evangelize Omarchy to all of tech Twitter in a couple of months. He doesn't have a crazy amount of followers, what did he do so well?

@MorriceGavin @pragdave @pragdave is right here. The contortions we do to satisfy the service contract are funny. Ruby is multi-paradigm for a reason and the language embraces modules and functions.

. @pragdave has been writing a lot recently about using singleton module methods to define stateless operations. He seems to be advocating a mixed paradigm of OOP and functional programming. This is definitely a step up from the current style of creating “service objects”—at least it’s honest in its intentions. This style can also be a neat way to enforce encapsulation, and keep code modular. I have trouble adopting this way of thinking though, because it’s adding an additional layer of complexity and uncertainty in writing code that doesn’t need to exist. I now have to ask myself: Am I defining a stateful or a stateless object? Presumably, I have to review this decision from time to time, when a previously stateless entity changes and now needs state? This is a false distinction in Ruby, because the “stateless” objects do indeed have state, by virtue of being Ruby objects. The state is just hidden at a higher level of abstraction. But I think the first objection is my strongest. OOP is a powerful paradigm because of the general uniformity of everything, and this style of writing code shatters that. media.pragprog.com/newsletters/20…

@mhenrixon I’ve noticed the opposite. I’m interested in doing a proper benchmark. Factories do much more work, and I’d be okay paying for 2-3 times the run time.

There is no reason to use fixtures anymore. They are not faster at all! Well-written factories will be slightly faster. The second file is with factories, and it is 13 seconds faster than using fixtures. So, if you want a fast test suite, you have to choose factories. I hope that finally puts that stupid argument to rest!

Mainstream Linux distros have been focused for too long on being as similar to Windows and Mac as possible to ease adoption. I've come to believe this isn't the way. Linux needs to embrace its own aesthetic, its own ethos, unapologetically. Lean into rice and TUIs!
