The Assemblymember representing one of the bluest districts in the country shows up at a hearing for a project he doesn’t even have a vote on to take a position clearly out of step with Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, and the top of the Democratic Party platform.
Open New York@OpenNYForAll

Assemblymember Bobby Carroll says “I know we need to do our job to make sure there is more housing… however” He spends the next 8 minutes on why this project should not get built.

As a BK native & renter, NYC’s housing shortage is personal for me. That’s why I support the Arrow Linen’s rezoning in one of the least affordable neighborhoods in the city. Ty to our neighbors who are calling for more housing @BKCB7 hearing tonight! citylimits.org/2024/01/03/opi…

Rents are lower and homes are more affordable when we build more homes. That’s why President Biden and Vice President Harris have put housing at the center of their economic agenda.

Why do we have a housing and population crisis in NY? See ⬇️ from Hudson, where the Planning Board has delayed this new project by 18+ months and has cut the size from 30 to 15 homes. Their rationale? 😭😭😭

The proposal being objected to is 123 new deeply affordable apartments targeted to LGBTQ seniors. The project will include 16,000 square feet of publicly accessible open space (open all year round to the public, unlike now…)

@arpitrage Possibly. Likely more of a factor of 0 housing growth in these cities’ suburbs and decent or more-than-decent growth in cities.

@andrewdfine That’s certainly possible - but when prices and rents go up much more in suburban areas than urban ones, seems very plausible some migration has taken place

@arpitrage Potentially what has changed is ACS / Census reliability. I am very very skeptical of these numbers. Let’s see what 2030 says…

Just taking childcare expenses — De Blasio passed historic free preschool expansion, and yet migration of families with young families increased to places without those subsidies

Very cool piece - highlights another urban risk as cities are no longer places for families. But one thing I’m unsure about is what has *changed.* Yes, house prices and childcare costs are high in urban centers. But that’s been the case for a while: what’s new?
Derek Thompson@DKThomp

I wrote about the urban family exodus. America's biggest and richest cities are losing children at an alarming rate. From 2020 to 2023, the number of kids under 5 declined by - almost 20% in NYC - about 15% in LA, SF, Chicago, and St Louis - >10% in NoLA, Philly, Honolulu

Same day, same city. We have a lot of offices relative to demand, and not a lot of apartments.

Thread about my recent (all too common) renting experience. A few months ago the landlord of my 50 year old apartment tried to raise the rent close to the max, so my roommate and I moved out. They now are paying for it.

Regulation is never going to fix this. Incentives could help it. NYC for a short time had the AIRS program which granted additional FAR for building affordable housing for seniors. Perhaps creating a similar program for family oriented units? (My understanding is that the program was killed as it wasn't "equitable for everyone". 🙄)
Senator Zellnor Y. Myrie 麥瑞@zellnor4ny

Our city's population of young children has fallen by 18% in under 4 years — because NYC’s cost of living is pushing families out. We owe it to NYers to do everything in our power to make this city a place where everyone can afford to raise a family. buff.ly/3W66LCx
