I think an advantage baseball had was that, for a lot of structural reasons, it was the first sport to optimize for winning over entertainment, feel the backlash, and then let that guide them in fixing stuff their fans didn’t like. Now the NBA is where MLB was a decade ago.
Inbound Ike.@inboundike

A significant reason MLB is passing the NBA in relevance is the fact that MLB is embracing its own existential weirdness and the NBA is trying to create a cheap imitation of Euro soccer traditions.

A team of 5 Nikola Jokic’s plays a team of 5 Michael Jordan’s in a game that is otherwise an NBA regulation game. What’s the spread?

@halfkelly I laughed at the poll thinking it would be 90% Jokic. What are the MJ people thinking? He could whip passes around the court, and is a better three point shooter and post player. Easy entry into post, double comes, open three. No double, easy layup

spent months futzing around with lifestyle habits + supplements + 8sleep to no avail, and then finally asked a doctor if there is any side-effect free miracle drug to fix this. turns out there is and im cured. claude never suggested it. i am setting my agi timelines back a year. i am so, so, so grateful for the pharmaceutical industry. raise the drug prices
owl@owl_posting

im yo-yo'ing back between 5.5 hours of sleep for 3 days, 7.5 hours of sleep for 1 day, and then repeat i have discussed this at length with claude and am doing basically all its supplement + most of its lifestyle recommendations. what else do i do? do i buy an 8sleep?

Lots of people thought Ukraine shouldn't fight back against Russia. Or that Israel should just accept being viciously attacked by Hamas and Hezbollah and not fight back. And now lots of people think the world should just be hostage to the IRGC. In every case these people are dead wrong. There is no good endgame from any of those world views, and it says a lot about someone's moral character to have those views. I wouldn't trust those people to do business with them.

BREAKING: An Iranian missile has struck Saudi Arabia. This comes just two days after Saudi Arabia warned Iran that any further attacks on its soil would elicit a military response.

Genuinely curious how this level of price dispersion for brick-and-mortar retailers can persist under negligible consumer search costs

As much as I hate to admit it, a conclusion I'm coming to is that the endowments are right and an important element of this is to diversify across alpha sources. The world of positive real return passive investments just isn't diversified enough. Hopefully it's easier for a small investor than an endowment.
Farmer@SowingAlphaSeed

My long-term goal is to construct a portfolio that I have extreme confidence will have a 3+% real return without significant drawdowns. Doesn't sound very ambitious, but the standard suggestions don't seem to meet that requirement IMO.

Visa is doing marketing consults (see pinned!)
interesting thing here is how when LLMs are asked, they corroborate the “no paid ads” narrative, by citing posts which imo was mostly mythologizing on the part of the companies/teams trying to imply that they had more organic word-of-mouth than they did
Shane O Leary@shaneoleary1

Classic Twitter moment here. Big claim that sounds concrete and well researched. Then THREE people who actually worked in these companies totally tear apart the point in the comments within hours 🤣

Via @karpathy: “the bottleneck on autonomous AI is not intelligence. It's not compute. It's not data. It's whether anyone can check the answer. That's it. That's the whole economics of AGI!” That’s a very novel and important insight!
Christian Catalini@ccatalini

Lots of people's social & romantic lives could be vastly improved if it was normal for young adults to live in college dorm-style accommodation in city centres until they were ready to set up home properly. Why doesn't this exist? I think there would be a market for it!

Maybe at some point or maybe across the whole sample happiness correlates at 95% with GDP. That’s certainly true in Africa where 10% more GDP means 10% more food to someone who is starving. When you think about the problems in America, 10% more money does not solve them.
